Good news...Final agreement signing to allow a wrong.....righted!

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2001998230_elwha06m.html

I hope this project can finally proceed and everything goes according to plan.

How long after the concrete is gone would you think the "new river" will be a fishable one? Ten years, 15, 20? Hope I live long enough to fish the upper flows with my boy some day!

This is great news. Actually I am really surprised that this is going forward. I thought politics would stall this forever.

Atlantic salmon returned to some smaller rivers where dams were removed within five years. There are a lot of great places to fish up the Elwha. Can't wait.

What good will removing the dam do? Less than a quater mile upstream there were falls impassible to fish.

skydriftin - "Less than a quarter mile upstream there were falls impassible to fish." I've never heard that one. I don't really think a project of this magnitude and importance would be considered if that was the case.

In everything I've read they talk about 70 miles of river which will be opened up to salmon and steelhead to spawn.

If any of you have read Mountain in the clouds ,you may recall that before the dams were built that a bank survey was conducted by a biologist that recorded a Chinook karkus over 72 inches in length.

Unfortunately those genetics are gone forever. We could learn something from that I think.....but its higly unlikely.

Remember how Slade Gorton stonewalled this effort for ten years? Remember his party affiliation?

I won't be counting any chickens on this one until I see some stuff blowing up.
