I've picked up some old school plugs. The kind for trolling the salt......

Anyways how do you rig them up? Swivel or not? Would you run them behind a flasher? Leader Distance?

I'm eager to try them out as they have some pretty gnarly bite marks in the shape of a salmons mouth on them. \:D

Thanks

I rig them main line to a bead chain then 6' to the plug. No flasher or dodger is needed.

Anyone ever use that Qwikfish bait wrap tp put a little piece of herring fillet or scent pad above the siwash? try it ;\)

I presume you mean tomic like plugs. These are great and the only thing you should put on these is scent so you don't mess up the action. Run them out 40-60 feet behind the boat on the downrigger. Before you lower them down watch the action. You want to speed up enough to make them dart back and forth, not shake like a river plug. Try this link. http://www.tomiclures.com/rigging_instructions.htm

Speaking of Tomic plugs...anyone know why they stopped putting a welded ring (to tie to) on them? Our hot plug at Ucluelet was on old 6 in that I had and rarely used down here. We bought new 7 in plugs that still didn't catch many fish (silvers will hit anything up there), until we noticed the old plug had the ring and the new ones didn't. We added split rings to tie to and the hot plug the last day was one of the new ones. My guess is that it allows more action from the plug at a slower speed. Any other thoughts?

Another tip is to tie a flasher to your downrigger ball about 6ft back and then stack the plug about 6ft above it, 40 ft back.

Jam Session - I think your suspicions are correct. That split ring probably allows more action on the plug. I spoke with a gentleman on the ferry in BC who pulls the steel piece out of his tomic plugs and runs the line through the hole that is left behind. This allows more action on the plug as well.
