Stlhd-
It is still possible to shoplift a fishing pole.
I believe there are also "scratch and dent" Lami's out there (How hard is it to throw a rod in the trash down at the factory and retrieve it later?) As well as 'second-hand' rods with unknown histories. What about re-sold beater returns that never make it back to the factory?
The manufacturer is probably still barely breaking even on the warranties.
I've returned three in my life, so far, and HAD TO PROVE I bought them. And, yes they were defective (except #3):
1) Butt kept falling off (replaced with new rod).
2) Brand-new Dave Vedder 10' 6" snapped at ferrule while landing a silver (Replaced with new rod)
3) Slammed in door (I paid a minimal repair price... and ended up with a brand new rod)
One of these alone was worth keeping a reciept, even for my "lifetime".
With so many "honest" people in this world I don't see how Lami could NOT require proof of purchase and a registered warranty card. Simple actuarial studies have most likely directed the policy direction.
Let's illuminate my point about warranty returns with the example of unethical fishing 'attitudes' -
If a person thinks it's O.K. snagging, lining, or whatever nefarious methods they use, and there are plenty of 'em, what logic (Illogic?) would show that this trait wouldn't carry over into business transactions? In my experience a dirtbag in bussiness is most often also a dirtbag in liesure pursuits.
I'm quite confident that the warranty (which is a form of a contract) states "materials and workmanship" and expressly excludes stuff WE DO to the rod. How can the manufacturer control that AND the legitimacy of purchase?
How is that Lami's fault?
So exercise your right to not enter into that agreement. Buy a rod for a fifth of the price, made in (Insert Asian/foreign country here) by poor folks who make $8 a month, and see what your warrantee covers....
I'm not implying you are that person, it's just an analogy.
Keeping the receipt and filing it isn't that hard.
The price for being lazy and not dotting the i's and crossing all of the t's is no warranty.
Thanks to Bill H. at Sportco my warranty card gets sent in right away when I purchase a new rod.
My job is to save the reciept.
Anyway, just another angle to consider...
