Just off the phone with my buddy Geoff fishing out of Ilwaco.
Limts the last 5 days on Herring at Bouy ten to Clatsop spit, fish are all "dandy's" to 43 #'s. I wish I could go.

Good topic as I'm heading out right now as we type.I'll be @ Ft.Stevens State Park from the 20th to the 29th.Moorage was purchased last sunday and it's time to rock. Some reports have been good for nookies and slow for hoho's.But things change with each tide.It should be fishon from the 22nd on.This is the biggest event of the year as far as fishing goes with the family. The kids love it and wife likes it even more with the money she saves on school supplies she gets down in Oregon while I'm runnin friends and family out fishin.
Good luck,
STRIKE ZONE

P.S. I'll be back with the results on Monday the 30th.

Thanks for the good news. I'm headed down there Sunday for a few days. I'll be the newbie salmon angler wondering why my salmon trolling rod doesn't have the "right" action for fly casting. I'd really appreciate suggestions regarding "must haves" and "must dos." I'm headed to the sport shop for a couple diving planers, maybe some Tuff Line, and 10 & 12 oz. sinkers (I've got smaller ones). I'll tie 3/0-4/0 combos on 30# Maxima, having been told that these toothy fish chew through lighter leaders. What else am I missing, besides 20 years experience - which I'm counting on friends to share?

Sincerely,

Salmo g.

I would run 4/0 5/0 with 40 or 50# leader. They aren't shy and having a monster strike that snaps a lighter leader realy puts a damper on things. If you dont tie any up and use them right away at least buy the heavier line to have it available.

I just came back from there.

Buoy 10 is cool.

40-50 lb leaders, like Sky-Guy said. He is not kidding. They will break you off. I know.

Going back Saturday. It should be a madhouse. Pay attention if you've never fished it before, The wind can throw you off course very easily. Not to mention the current. It is close quarter fishing at it's finest

Did I mention Buoy 10 was cool? \:D

Thanks everyone for the recommendations. I bought enough tackle at Sportco to open a branch outlet down there. Did use 4/0-5/0 hooks on 40# leader and chartruese painted banana sinkers. Got all those divers and fish flashes and other doo-dads left over.

The weather was god-awful. My friends had me convinced they carfully picked this as the best week to fish, but did I mention the weather was awful Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday? It was an interesting experience, and I'll probably try it again after the bruises heal from all the bouncing around the boat I did.

I didn't catch any large kings, but 3 kings and 3 silvers have me borrowing freezer space at a friend's house. I was impressed by the size of the silvers - up to 15 pounds. And interestingly, about half the silvers we caught were unmarked, which is remarkable since the Columbia River is over 98% hatchery silvers.

Thanks again for the advice.

Sincerely,

Salmo g.

Yeah we fished inside this last wednsday and thursday inside and boy was it slow, we seen a few fish caught and had one hit. It has really slowed down. The bar was nasty so the Ocean wasn't an option. Friday the bar cleared up and we shot across and had limits by 11am of silvers, saw no kings though.
