I was wondering what the proper preservation of salmon aggs would be if you dont cure them right away. I usually freeze them and I have had success with them.

As much as I fish if I was to cure the eggs right after I caught the fish I would have skeins all over the place curing. If somebody could advise me to a way to store them til I was to cure them.

You really want to cure them before you freeze them however........

I have vacuum packed uncured eggs in a quart jar, thawed and then cured and they came out fine. The freezing did not appear to rupture the cell membrane and cause the eggs not to milk.

stlhd_dreaming, I'm guessing you wouldn't go afield with poorly maintained equipment or bad line on your reel. Why use anything but the finest bait you can get your hands on?

Curing after freezing may work, but it's far from ideal.

I agree with the others. Frozen eggs are not the best for curing. If you can't get to them immediatly rinse them well, to remove all blood, (bleed the fish immediatly, of course) then store in a air free zip lock bag in the fridge. I have kept them that way for more than a week before curing.

i like to take a gallon jar with rock salt and sugar. clean the eggs and then drop them in. put in a dark cool place they will make there on juice then i just keep adding and using them some times adding more salt and sugar
i have taken them out cut them into bait and roll in borax they work good for me.

pak 'em in 20 mule team borax( still available in your local grocery store ). Use what you will for the upcoming season. The balance will freeze well particularly if you vacuum pack them with the borax.
IMO, boric acid is the key.

If they can't be cured right away, the borax method works just fine. Borax ansplit skeins las well over a week in the fridge, and will still tale a commercial cure later on.

Boric acid? Is that what borax is?
