I've been using the Owner brand cutting point hooks for a couple of months now and I am very impressed. They are the sharpest hook I have come across. In addition to sharpness, they cut through flesh on entry as opposed to pushing it aside as conical points do. If you haven't already tried them, give them a shot. You'll be pleased.

I've always been a diehard Gammy guy, but I used the Owners for the first time this spring, and I was very impressed.

I'll try them out this fall, when I'll have lots of fish to catch and can give them a more head to head comparison with Gammys...I have a feeling they'll do well.

Fish on...

Gammy, Owners, both good hooks IMO.

What I want to know is, where is the best deal for buying them in bulk? I hate buying 6 at a time, I want a good deal on 100, or more of my favorite sizes.
Please don't say eBay, I scour that place already.

"cut through the flesh"....great now they'll ban Owner hooks.... \:\)

In this day and age we need to be using dull point less hooks to protect the fish.

GI Joes sells them in bulk. I noticed them at the Northgate store a few weeks ago.

Sol, I can't swallow paying that much for hooks. There has to be a cheaper source.

Seastrike, I have seen them at those stores too, But thatr isnt a good deal. They want 30-40 $$ for hooks, way too much IMO.

Just seeing if anyone here knows of a really, really good deal.

Hey Sky,

I did a search on google and came up with this.... http://www.wholesalers-direct.com/6510025.html

Looks like you can get 40 for $19.95. I also found the same price at BassPro Shops.

I dont remeber the price but sportco sells owners in bulk. I have been buying the smaller packs and need to get somemore. I only use them for fishing in the salt so I purchase the stainless ones. I stay away from gammies The very first one I used many years ago snapped off at the eye. I had a nice summer run with an attitude on the end of the line and then snap. I thought the line broke but when I reeled up the know held but hook broke. I have just never really been a fan since then. I have used them a couple of times after that and no problems.

I've also done some searching for the Owner hooks. The best I've found is:
http://www.outdoor-arena.com/shop/item.asp?affillink=FROOG22045003&itemid=9351949

$15.81/40 pack which is better than wholesalers-direct.com
$19.78 - also, if you buy >$200 shipping is free. They actually gave me free shipping for an order of about $100.

Contact them at

As a guy who deals with surgical needles on a regular basis, I can tell you that a surgeon would almost never suture tissue with anything other than a cutting point, unless the goal is to ensure that the suture tract is watertight ( vascular micro-surgery, glaucoma micro-surgery). A cutting needle penetrates tissue with incredible ease compared to a conical tapered needle.... it's like night and day.

The same goes for fishing hooks.... cutting points just penetrate better. That said, I have not converted to Owner hooks because of what others have already alluded to..... exorbitant prices for small quantities. Besides, I have done well with Gamakatsu's all these years. Happy to see there is bulk pricing available on the Owners.. Bad news is my timing is way off.... just placed an order for bulk Gamakatsu's before reading this post. Oh well, next time around.

They are second to nothing I've found.. Another hook that is sharp as heck but not as sharp as Owner is the Matzuo.. Now those have a good barb to compared to most hooks.

I prefer the Owners for Salmon and the Gami's for Steelhead. The Owners are a stronger hook.

I use Auburn sports and Marine "brand" $6.99 for 25 hooks , they resemble gamy's quite a bit, I actually cant tell a difference between them, I dont use them again after I get a fish on them , so I cant afford to use gamy's.

Ya all are gett'n ripped. Joes and Fishermans in the PDX area have them for 13.99 to 14.99 for 40. Size 4/0 and up. Smaller sizes are cheaper by a buck or more.

I believe all of the guys quoting the very low prices are talking about Owner needle point hooks (which are very similar to the Gamakatsu) not the cutting point hooks ... huge difference.

Can you guys check again?

Ted's in Lynnwood has the cutting point packs.
43ea 2/0 for $ 17.99
40ea 3/0 for $ 17.99
34ea 4/0 for $ 17.99
29ea 5/0 for you guessed it $ 17.99
They have others but thats what I happen to have in front of me now and all I will be useing for the next 6 weeks. Its like the differance between a chisel point and bladed broadhead for you archery guys and they are sticky sharp.
