I am going on leave after today, and I think I am going to do some fishing. i am pretty new to the area, but am a little familiar with the nisqually. I am also going to try the hatchery at hoodsport as reports on the phone line say that some chinooks are in. I will report to you if I see or hopefully (crossing fingers) catch anything.

I went there yesterday. Lost a nice King close to the bank, rolled two more and finally landed one about 10lbs. Lots of Chromers ranging from 10-20lbs. Also, lots of people. Seems orange corkie and yarn works best. The guy upriver from me was drifting eggs and was doing alright, lost 2 using 10lb test line. Water was alittle dirty but if you put in the time you'll land 1-2. Remember, Indians net Sunday thru Wed.

On Friday the water was at it's highest and only about a 1 1/2 feet. It looked like it was the end of November. Saw a few caught but not many. Now the water has to of cleared up a bit and gone down a bit. People said lots of fish the night before.

if you look down river of the Mounts Road Bridge you'll see power lines crossing the river. We were 1-2 hundred yards downriver of that. You'll need to wade out about mid river and cast to the far side. There is some " soft " water they like to hold in. GOOD LUCK

Fishaddict, is the place you described on the military side or the public side? I unfortunately don't have one of those passes that lets you use military land. Thanks

I am retired Army so I do fish on the military side. Many of the people that fish on the Nisqually dont have passes. All the MP's will do is ask you to leave. In the 15 years i've been fishing I've only seen them there 3 times.

Uh, I disagree with the Mp "Only seen them three times" statement, which is probably true in your experience. But, I've seen them MANY times and watched tow trucks come with them (2001?). They are not nice after a few weeks of asking people to leave. If you take the time to get a pass it is no problem. I've had a pass for several years and just tell them it's in my window. Also, you must carry the other pass on your person. Last year they had their M-16's (M4A1's?) with them! Scary bunch of dudes with those red berets and no smiles if you have no pass. But cool if you do. And, yes I have seen them politely ask people to leave many times as well, but why take the risk of being hassled? They can impound you and your vehicle. Get a pass. I'll leave that up to you, cuz actually, less is more down there...

Phreak, I too disagree to that statement. They are real tough this year, thanks to 911.

Iron head, 911 was over 3 years ago. They are tough now becuase of the people who disobey the regs. Kind of like people getting busted for snagging. Same deal. Follow the regs and you're good.

Iron head, 911 was over three years ago. They are tightening down becuase of the disobedience. You have to obey the law. It's just like the jerks that get busted for snagging or any other kind of illeagle fishing. Break the rules and pay. Same deal. Do what you are supposed to and you're good!

I talked with an MP yesterday and asked the same question: Why do you care if people fish? He went on to tell me that the reason for all of the checks and whatnot has to do with the fact that lots of people are "not fishing." In the past 10 years they've busted meth labs, found dead bodies, and made countless drug busts in that area..... Could have something to do with 9/11 but it seemed to be the same way back before 9/11..... Just get a pass and call it good.

I ve been fishing down at the Mounts Road bridge the past 2-3 weeks so far Ive gotten 4 kings 3 jacks (i got one jack this mornin) and saw 2 silvers brought to the bank, Lately its been crowded down there 24/7 but if you dont mind squeezing in you should be fine juss mind the guys next to ya. Oh yeah Since last weekend them snags have seem to grow 10 fold, lotta people snaggin up now, but its not bad if you got a couple of free hours, Ive been using longer leaders the past 2 years and it seems most people down there are too. Most leader ther are 6-12ft long (I usually use one bout 7ft long) and two of the smaller corkies (usually in red, orange, peach, pink) and a 1/0 hook, I sometimes use yarn it all depends if I dont wanna be lazy to cut the piece ( chartruese, orange, or red have been workin really well and are usually the color of choice) Juss thought I would give my report, see ya all down there and remember to sound off! FISH ON!!!!
