Looking for ratings of mid weight spinning reels that will hold up to the rigors of salmon. I keep burning out parts in my Shimano sahara 4000s which are priced right but a little undersized. Unfortunately they don't make a 5000 series. I am using tuff line to cast spinners and I just get a little better distance with a spinning reel as opposed to a casting reel.

I'll second the thumbs up on Okumas

Dollar for dollar they're hard to beat on price and they compare favorably to many higher priced reels.

I also use an Okuma " Inspira " and a Shimano " Stradic " both awesome reels that I spooled with Power Pro. You'll need to place them on a Lamiglas " Certified Pro"

I personally like the forward drag Spirex and the 4000 is pleanty big enough for kings but I can still get better distance out of my Curado.

Granted the 4000 is big enough in most cases. However I primarily fish tidewater where:
a. the bail assembly eventually falls apart, perhaps from the salt
b. the internal gears get out of synch from the hard cranking
c. the handle assembly wears out from the endless cranking on the spinners against the tide
d. sometimes you need a reel you just gotta crank on to try and turn a chinook when seals are about.
p.s. I do like my curado which is hard to beat for the steelies.

I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of a Quantum Cabo saltwater baitcasting reel, I'm putting 50# powerpro on it.
