My Garcia 5500 finally bit the dust and i am looking for a new reel. I like the low profile reels better then round ones but it seems that all the lowpros have to low of a line capacity. I found one, the daiwa procaster tournament PT100-4Bi which is only 50 bucks and has a line capacity of 200/12. Anyone else hae this reel? any other suggestions for a decent low profile baitcaster?

My thought is this- How many times has a fish got 200 yards away from you? Most reels like curado 200 are around 150 of 12 and are fairly inexpensive. If a fish gets that far away then you have problems anyway.. I wouldnt be that concerned about having to get 200 yrds on..

i like currados but there out of my price range...

I have a Pflueger Trion low profile. I bought a brand new one on Ebay for 70 bucks, including shipping. They are about 99 bucks retail. Many think they are as good as the Curados. I am very pleased with mine.

Also, check out the Shimano Calyx 100, 100A, or 200A. They are decent low profile reels, and you can get new ones on Ebay for under 50 bucks. They retail for around 80 bucks. I got my 100 for 40 bucks, including shipping. The 200A (or is it the 200?) has the same gear ratio as the 100, but a bigger line capacity.

The Abu 4600C3 or 4600CL3 series are smaller that the 5500C3 series. Good prices on Ebay too. I've bought a bunch of 5500C3 and a 4600CL3 on Ebay for about 32 bucks, in mint or new condition.

Check out Ebay and you will find many good (and some bad) reels at great prices. Just be sure to buy from reliable sellers and do not pay more with the shipping charges, than you would pay retail at a store.

Now that I think about it.... I've blown way too much money on Ebay reels... I have an overabundance of good new/near-new discounted reels that I got from Ebay.

Just bought a Pflueger Trion yesterday @ Joe's for the retail price of $99 as stated above. I have two Curado BSF201's that I love but the action on that Pflueger was amazing! It just kept going and going.....

Matched it up with a new steelhead/coho rod & now time to take this virgin set up to the river & get it some action!

Hi I am new to this website. I just learned about it from a friend. I just wanted to say hi to everyone. I think pflueger makes a great reel at a great price. Their reels have some of the same features as reels that cost a lot more. I own 1 trion bait caster and 2 spinning reels. Hope this helps u out.

I used a low profile quatum reel, it sounded like gravel after a month. I then bought an Okuma Induron 400 which is not a low profile but seems to be performing well.

I'll jump on the growing Pflueger Trion admiration society bandwagon --they're less than half of what a Shimano Chonarch w/wiffle spool costs--they have all the high-end features (without the high-end price) and want to spin indefinatley.

As far as quality for $'s spent goes--I don't think the Pflueger Trion can be beat.

I like the feel of my Trion but for me I can cast much better with my Curado BSF200. I must admit I am not much of a Bait caster YET. Its almost like the trion spins so well its hard to stop (backlash city). If I can figure it out I will buy more of them.

The Trion has 6 weights inside the cover, and you can adjust those for max. cast distance, or max. braking power on your casts. I would start with having them all "engaged" or in the "out" position.

Another suggestion is to be cautious about what rod your using (make sure it's rated for the spoon, etc. your tossing). If the rod is rated at 1/3 oz. and your tossing a 1/4 oz. a backlash is imminent. Also, trying to toss a float/jig combo is tough, as the float is not aerodynamic and causes the reel to feed out faster.

Train your thumb well. You'll get there.

As to the Trion, I did just have to have mine replaced. The drag washers were compressed, and essentially I had no advancing drag. Northern Sales swapped it right out, and I've had it for awhile...but it was in new cond. and with the box. (helps to have the wife working there, too..:-) I LOVE the reel, all the same, and am fixing to go put an hour of work on the new one. Fish are rising..:-)

how much line do trions hold?

190 yds of 10lb, 140yrds of 12lb to around 100yrds of 15lb maxima...Plenty

I love the Trions BUT type of line makes a radical difference in addition to the weights/brakes. I've tried at least six different brands of line, all #12 test. I found with that reel I have the most control with Izor or Maxima Chameleon. Both work really well. The Maxima may be a tad more abbrasion resistant but also slightly stiffer. You'll still need good thumb control no matter what just not as intense with the lines listed above. Other lines I tried were Trilene, Stren, Barracuda, Maxiam UltraGreen.

I also run Shimano Calcuttas and they are without doubt much more controlable then the trions but at three times the price too. It's almost like the Trion overspins in the middle of the cast and overruns the brake before it slows the spool down.

BTW you can find Supreme's from a couple years ago that are the same reel as the Trion. Same color, parts are interchangable and you can find them on eBay from time to time for around $50. An excellent value.
