Duramax is a 100% Acrylic Latex paint, and it is sold by Lowes. Rather than buy expensive marine paint for a boat that lives on the trailer and is only in the water 6-12 hrs. at a time, using a high gloos, 100% acrylic latex paint is about 20% the cost and gets the same quality, long lasting finish....(or so I am told by old time boat builders). I can tell you the stuff dries real hard, and is supposed to be one of the most durable paints on the market, designed for porches, decks, etc.

Thanks for the kudo's...it's been a lot of work, but a lot of fun...and it ain't done yet.

Thank the Lord for a patient wife!

Mike

Thanks. it looks good. I just finished a Don Hill 17' Db and I Am a few days from painting it. I was looking at the Garage floor epoxy paint at lowes for the int. and the Interlux at $100 per gallon for the ext. I will look into the Duramax now. I put 20 oz Biax fiberglass on the bottom and a 4" 25 oz strip on the chine so in effect I have a fiberglass pan on the bottom of a framed boat. I have coat it for the bottom.

Cool! Where's the pics????? (Yeah, were nosy.. \:D

I did not glass the bottom, but instead added that 1/4" ply skid plate. I was not pleased with how the Coat-It went on, and found it difficult to apply. That could have been attributed to the bare plywood bottom vs. one with glass, as you have, but I found the epoxy + 30% graphite powder to be a dream to flow on, and I'm very pleased with the end results..so far.

As for the paint, here is a link to a discussion by old-timer, professional boat builders. Note especially the comments by Dave Carnell. My take is the guy really knows his poop about paints.

I have paid $6 (and change) per quart for the Duramax, and they can make any custom color you want. So far, in three coats, I've used just shy of a quart of it, and have a quart to spare for us in the trim parts of the interior. I bought the same paint in a different color for the bulk of the interior (floor, inner sides, etc.).

Hope that is of some help.

Mike

Mike,

I talked with an old timer in ore that swears by the 1/4 shoe on the bottom.

Thanks for the links that makes a lot of sense. I will most likely go that route. it seems a waste of time to use two part epoxy paints that then need to have a UV coating over them. Then take it out and beat it on the rocks.
