I have a question about boat taxes.. i am sure someone here has recently bought a boat and will have some insight..
if i read the department of licensing's website correctly. there is both an excise tax to pay based on 5% if the fair market value and on top of that you have to pay the state sales tax unless you paod sales tax in another state... is that correct , this would bring the tax on the boat to 13%... am i correct here???

bringing the cost of a 7500 dollar boat to 8402.50

I thought I read where the excise tax didn't come into play on boats under 16' in length.
Over 16... be prepared for "sticker" shock.
My first one was $110 and I thought there had to be a mistake. Licensing people explained it to me.

Robert: Go to Oregon and buy a 15'11" driftboat. You pay no sales tax there, and if you don't motorize it you don't have to register it here. You would only have to register the trailer, $30.00 You save about $850.. Mike

I have a simmaler question. I'm getting ready to buy a 17' drift boat from Oregon for around 8,000.00 How much tax money would I be looking at to get it licensed in WA?

once you pass 16 feet non-motorized has to jump through all the same hoops as a motorized to an 8000 dollar driftboat would be subject to all the state taxes regardless of where you buy it,, legally even if you buy it in Oregon you have to pay a "use tax" in the state of Washington. so don't buy a boat in Oregon thinking you'll dodge the sales tax...
Unless that is i am misunderstanding whats on the department of licensings website, which can be reaches through wa.gov

I bought a 20' Wooldridge in August. I paid 8.8 % sales tax, plus $250 for the license. I purchased the boat in Seattle. Some Cities have more or less added on to the state sales tax. I considered buying the motors in Oregon as together they were around $13,000 to save on sales tax, but decided against it.
I was glad to see that I will be able to deduct the sales tax from Federal Tax on this year's taxes.

I am sorry i didn't mean to imply that you were trying to cheat on sales tax or anything like that, sorry if it came across that way.. Important thing about buying a boat is to get exactly what you want!!! it's a bummer to invest a bunch of money and not have what you want.... new or used, oregon or washington taxes or not.. get what you want thats the most important thing...

Well........ I bought a 17*54 Willie last year at the pewallop sportsman show. Paid cash - paid no sales tax. Now, if I put a motor on it and license it, I will have to pay tax.
trailer licensing about $30.

Lunch time - if you bought it through a dealer you did pay sales tax - they probably just rolled it into the price.

eddie - you may be right? I bought it from willie boats, I have an oregon receipt, and the price was the same as advertised in any magazine you read. Prior to the purchase I checked into financing and was informed that I would be paying sales tax on the list price. Incidentally which is the same price I paid when I used cash. If in doubt call willie boats for a quote.

If you have an Ore receipt then you did not pay ST. If you finance then you are buying it from the finance company not an Oregon company most likely. They do not pay sales tax if they buy it in Ore but they are charged sales tax on the sale of financing to you in Wa.
