No more over the counter replacements for Allstars from Sportco. If you break a rod, which happens a lot with Allstars, you have to ship it to the Factory yourself. I wouldn't have bought any Allstars from Sportco if it weren't for the OTC replacement policy.

You might want to check out this old thread...seems All Star Rods got sold to Shakespeare.... http://www.piscatorialpursuits.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=018148#000000 Likely the reason for the change on the OTC return policy. I've got one (9'6" 8-12#) that is my wife's rod. She loves it, but the action is a bit slow for me. I wouldn't buy another without the OTC return policy, after hearing of so many of them breaking. I'm on the pro staff and I was told by shakes' they discontinued the OTC because of the abuse of people replaceing rods when they just wanted new ones, Texas was the worst, anyway, they are still a good rod , and it may be a pain in a#* but they will honor the warranty as spelled out . good luck!

Beezer, just curious how many have you owned? I've got 25 of them, most of them 1082's, 1083's 1141's 1085's and 962's. In the 3 years I've owned them I've broke 4 of them, 2 on hooksets, 2 my own fault, one got wrapped around the motor while I was turning, the other I was leading a 25# king with a 1083 and, yep you guessed it, had my hand up above the cork about a foot. Are they as good as a gl3? nope. Better than a gl2? yep. Want better than a gl3, try one of the new Titanium's when they hit the market, less money.

Sorry FH5, but I DEFINITELY disagree with the "better than a GL2" statement. I bought my first Allstar a few years ago on recommendations from this board (an 1143c) at Ted's in Lynnwood. It felt pretty good and the price and (at that time) OTC warranty seemed like a good deal. Let's just say that after breaking 3 in a row all within a week or 2 of getting them, I lost all faith in using them. Next I bought an 1141s and same story, Snapped at the ferrule... JUST CASTING! Another replacement on that one broke within 2 weeks FISHING FOR SHAD! Ted's stopped the OTC 'cause so many were being brought back snapped in half. Now it seems that every retail outlet is doing the same. I own a good selection of GL2's, GL3's and Lami Certified Pro's. The Allstar Elite series IMHO, IS NOT the same caliber rod. As a side note, I've never broken any of my Loomis' or Lami's. I DO know how fragile a light action graphite rod can be and I DON'T abuse them. I'm glad that you've had pretty good luck with your Allstars, I was hoping that they would work out the same for me, but no dice. OK parker... time to put your 2 cents in and dispute everything I just said.

I've got an AllStar 1264, which is a pretty heavy rod, that I use for floats, chums, and chinook. It's held up just great for me...my only complaint is that the top three inches of it wasn't strong enough to withstand being closed in the car door . Other than that, it's cool. I haven't used lighter ones much...I don't own any, but I've casted a few. They feel nice, and they are pretty darn affordable, but I can't speak to the durability. Fish on... Todd

My AllStar busted in two making a cast. I took it back and got a credit for a Lamiglas. Much happier now.

Retailers now should have warranty cards to hand out to allstar purchasers/owners explaining the change in warranty policy. Without the OTC exchange policy... ...Allstar is

I like my 1263C and I caught three steelhead on it today, yes, 11/11/04. It is my primary float rod for either jigs or eggs under a float (today's weapon of choice).
I have taken a number of kings on it, and a 27# steelhead. There is not a lot of backbone to this rod, but then again, it is only rated 4-10#. Good touch and I like the length.
I've seen folks break a perfectly good Loomis on a silver at Sekiu for no reason at all. Just broke. I have broken one rod in my life while fishing, it was an eagle claw 15-25# 8.5' rod that got snagged on a rock at Duncan rock with braid.
I still have a Kunan classic 96 that I have fished since 1988. Who knows how many fish I've caught on that rod? Just take care of your equipment and don't abuse it. (I caught 2 chum on this rod today.)
There are some defects with some rods, on a case by case basis, but honestly, I think most rod breakage occurs due to user error.

I built a halibut rod from an Allstar blank for a good friend of mine who used to live in Alaska. He chose to match it with a Calcutta reel. What a combo! He caught a ton of butts with it over a span of 5 years before he moved back to WA. I even got to fish with it a few times, hooking into a number of 100+ pound butts. The rod made playing these monsters a whole lot 'o fun. I will be looking to build my own halibut rod with an Allstar blank.

Parker took a week off to paint his new paint. Wow, that wasn't fun.
I do get to sneak out and hopefully bang a couple of winter brats tomorrow!
As for the Allstars, I personally would not by one again. The Elite's were "OK" rods, but nothing to sneeze at. The Titaniums are also "OK" rods, but don't even compare to an IMX.
Joe was suppose to give me a couple of Titanium rods, but hasn't come throught yet on his end of the deal. Go figure.
If you're gonna spend the money, I'd have TH make you up a nice custom Rainshadow.
If you don't want to go custom, I'd look in to Lamiglass and Loomis.

Unlce Joe gave me the "demo" Allstar Titanium 1025c yesterday and I put it to the to test on a bunch of bright Queets tidewater coho and kings.
It's a nice rod. Much nicer than the Elites.
BUT....
I have no idea if and when they are shipping and how much they would cost.
The Titaniums have the high end SciTic guides, exposed reel seats, and is very well made. The blank isn't as light as an IMX 1025, but probably closer to the GL3 1025.
But, if the price is lower over the Loomis, the Allstar Titanium has much better/nicer components and is a well made rod.
If and when they ever come out in to the market, give them a look over a GL3 Loomis.
"The Boy" is due on the 30th of December. "The Boy" *BETTER* not be showing up now! Ugh. If anything, "The Boy" needs to wait until after the Snoopy Rod Classic!

First of all if you are breaking a rod while casting it you have not put it together properly or you should not be fishing and riding the short bus!!! All you homers crack me up, If most of you new just a little bit about rod construction and materials you would be dangerous!!

Superfly, It seems kind of odd how after 30+ years of fishing, I buy an AllStar and all of a sudden I can't seem to figure out how to put a rod together.
I guess its just a miracle that all my Lamiglas rods have survived my incompetance.

I own a bunch of Allstar Elites, I havent had one fail due to normal use. Of the 4 that have broke, the dog ate one, opne found the prop of my Minn Kota Rip Tide (dont ask) one got killed by a downrigger ball on a rough bar crossing and the the other was touched by a complete moron who hung up a Kwikfish and was rearing back hard on the rod with 65 lb Tuff Line and a 40lb leader. I catch plenty of fish with my Allstars. Allstar carries a rod for about every style of fishing I do. In fact I have 4 each of 2 different models. The 1143 S's for side drifting and the 962C's for Kwikies, trolling and divers for Salmon. If I had purchased another brand of rod I would have only been able to afford 1/2 of what Ive got now. Remeber this, Rods dont catch the fish, The guy holding the rod does the catching.

You are 100% right Aunty, my 962's where late coming in, guess who had 3 rods waiting for me, Superfly. I needed some extra kwiki's, Superfly had a box of 10 waiting for me. Bobbers, line, turnaround ride. You name it whats his is mine to use, if I need it. If everyone had a friend like him you wouldn't have to worry about much.

Hey man...........everyone gets a little riled up from time to time. I've spent the day with Joe several times and he's been a pleasure to be around. I'm sure if someone brought up politics, or Husky football, he'd give his opinion as clearly as possible with some explatives, just for effect. I'm also sure that if you were standing next to him and ran out of lead, he'd hit you up with a healthy chunk, and then point out where to cast to improve your odds. I don't know Joe to be an angry type either. Of course everyone gets bent out of shape sometimes. I usually do it on the political/anything goes board, though. That way not everyone reads it.
