Got a daiwa low-pro baitcaster, last time i used it, it got dunked, so i took it apart and cleaned and oiled it. Oil was aplied to bearings, and it was a clear slilicone based oil(by hoppes) Reel grease was aplied to gears. So heres the problem, the 1st couple cranks of my reel are nice and smooth, but after a few cranks it becomes hard to turn, smooth still, but with resistance. Any ideas? is it the gease, or something else?
Thanks

Had the same problem w/ a Penn 209 levelwind reel. The wormdrive was shot.
The worm drive is the deal that guides the levelwind mechanism.

Try replacing that part if you can get it.
Or send it to Olie Damons down in Portland. They're the best in the Norhtwest from what i've heard and they're STS mag endorsed.

No extra parts, i took it apart again today when i got home from school. I discovered that i had got grease into the bearings, so i took the bearings and cleaned them with brake cleaner and then oiled them throughly with the oil. Works better then new now.

Reels don't seem to like taking a dunking. But once they dry out they will work again. Don't you hate it when your reel handle sticks and your fishing partner is getting all the action and fun while you try futilely to "fix" your reel on the spot? :p Had that happen more than a couple too many times so I retired the reel permanently and switched over to a Daiwa spinning reel that doesn't look fit for salmon/steelhead fishing. Surprise surprise, it's a cheap reel but it got the job done(including fighting a couple 15-20lb chinook and not suffering at all). Silver slayer- Best insurance against the problem is trying not to let the reel get dunked.

Thanks for the advice, in my defence i was pissed cause one of my guides ruined 300+ yards of brand new maxima ultragreen 12. So i just stuck the butt end in the water and started searching for the guide.
