Who else is tired of seeing Camel Corkies or Marlboro Corkies floating down a stream after somebody is done with their cigerette? Not only is it disgusting but it is very disrespectful to everyone else, the environment and mostly to the fish and wildlife. Again, I blame the parents for not teaching these folks to know better. If you must smoke, put it out and pack it out with the rest of your trash. Show some respect and be smart. If this offends a smoker, I am sorry, I am not saying you should stop smoking (thats your business/problem) but when you just throw your butts on the ground or into the water.........thats my business/problem.

I am a smoker.........but when i'm done i put my butt's in my pocket to carry out with me...if some people dont want to put butts in there pockets, carry a small ziplock or something to put them in...it only takes a second longer to put them in your pocket ..........I actually have one pocket in my vest that i have saved just for garbage and ciggarette butts..........also i try and pick up garbage along the way wether it's mine or not...if everybody did this we wouldnt see so much trash around our favorite fishing spots

Good thread...

I rarely smoke when I fish (I'm a Copenhagen man, and it leaves two hands free!)...but on the occasion that I do, I usually carry a metal Altoids tin...

Chongo, I saw you were going back up fishing today...how was it?

I'm going out tomorrow to give it a shot...how'd the river look?

Fish on...

Todd

Out-flippin-standing Chongo. You're definitely the exception to the rule on the smoking thing and I commend you for it. I think most of us carry our own garbage out and a few of us do the "carry other folks garbage" out thing. Parents, I blame parents. If I did that stuff as a kid I would get my a$$ beat.....once! After that I'd do or not do what I got the beatin for cause I didn't want a whoopin again. Its just not that difficult.

Well, here goes......I smoke and flip my butts in the river....always have. The butts get torn up by the river and are gone in short order.....unlike lost corkies, plugs, spoons, spinners, and nearly all other varieties of lures.

So in my opinion....you are being a lot ridiculous. I don't, by the way, flip my butts on the ground, I don't smoke in the house, and I won't blow smoke in your face. But I ain't packing out cigarette butts.

You want to jump on something....try beer bottles/cans and bait containers. Or just plain fishing line.

In your behalf, I will say that I had one young game warden tell me to pick up a butt that I had flipped in the river. I said, "What?" He said, "I'm sorry. It's just a pet pieve of mine." I said, "It sure is!" So it just goes to show that there are others in your arena.

I ain't likely to change, and likely neither are you. It would be a shame if we couldn't fish together, though.

The river rips em up???? You must have cracked our skull?!!! As for the lures and line......all biodegradable and overtime "goes away" but cigarette butts, they last a bit longer since they are made of "natural" ingedients (metals) where your butts are synthetic and take so very much longer to break down. I'd still fish with you but you should (in french accent) go to box.....feel shame.

Litter is litter, and it's inconsiderate (and probably illegal) to leave any kind of it outdoors. Doesn't matter if it's bottles or butts. The argument that someone else litters more than you do is the same that my 7 year old uses, and it is a pitifully weak one. Sorry, but that one hit a sore spot.

There is a reason that they call them "Butts" and I would rather not have someone above me on the river enrich my outdoor experience with their discarded addiction.

I have always noticed this when on the river.
I always notice butts on the bank and it irritates me to see but I try not to let it piss me off too much.
I hate to see butts tossed out of car windows, too.
Look at the ground at a busy intersection and see how many butts are laying around.
I have fished with people who will use their empty sandshrimp container or throw butts in the fishbox.
We live and fish in a beautiful area.
Have some respect.

not only is it bad to throw the cig butts in the river, just smoking on the river alone should be outlawed, how many of u enjoy sitting down in ur favorite hole, enjoying the fresh air, when some jerk walks in on yah and lights one up, stinking up the whole place.....one of my favorite lines is....what, is the air to clean for ya buddy.

i mean if theres people around, atleast ask them if they mind it if u smoke around them

just my .02,
reyns

I'm a smoker and I never throw a butt anywhere. I always field strip it and put the butt in my pocket or in a garbage can/ashtray. Each cigarette butt pollutes 12 gallons of water, that's just not cool man! They look like crap laying all over the place nobody denies that. So just STOP PUTTING THEM IN THE WATER. Do you throw them into a lake too? They are not getting torn up there that's for sure hust sitting around looking like ass polluting the water.
AND: Camel filters are made from cotton, so they'll go away pretty quick (the chemicals still pollute though) Marlboro filters are made from some type of fiberglass they should not go in the water at all.

As far as making smoking on the rivers illegal I was in new york for the first time a year ago and was shocked that you can't smoke in a bar...!@#$%^& smoking nazi's

I offer you a couple of bits of info concerning cigarette butts, even though I have little interest in pursuing this much further. The point that "litter is litter" is valid, but to me, this obsession with butts is anal (pun intended) \:D

First article describes the composition of filters.

"Most cigarette filters are made from cellulose acetate. Eastman Chemical Company and Hoechst Celanese Corporation are the leading suppliers of the material to cigarette companies."

Second article describes some other uses.

"Commercially, cellulose acetate is made from processed wood pulp. The pulp is processed using acetic anhydride to form acetate flake from which products are made.
Coming from wood pulp, means that unlike most man-made fibers, it comes from a renewable resource and is biodegradable.
Another technique for producing cellulose acetate involved treating cotton with acetic acid, using sulfuric acid as a catalyst………….

Other applications of cellulose acetate include:
· Wound dressings
· Personal hygiene products
· Absorbent cloths and wipes
· Specialty papers
· Filter media, including cigarette filters. Such materials are often referred to as “tow”."

Now does anyone care to investigate yarn??

I am now done with this.....well, almost. I just may be posting a picture shortly of a CIGARETTE-FILTER-caught steelhead. I will be giving it a shot, and I have no doubt that I can catch fish with them.......just for fun, you understand.
