FBI Warns Cities About Demonstrations

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) - The FBI has told law enforcement agencies across the country that radical environmentalists may stage protests, possibly violent ones, this weekend in support of a jailed arsonist.

The FBI bulletin said the Earth Liberation Front reportedly was planning a ``day of action and solidarity'' that could include acts of eco-terrorism, according to Tor Bjornstad, a police commander in Olympia, one of several cities named as possible targets.

Some of the others were Eugene; Ore.; San Francisco; Modesto, Calif.; Morgantown, W. Va.; Portland, Maine; Worcester, Mass.; Lake Worth, Fla.; and Lawrence, Kan., Bjornstad said.

The general warning was part of a weekly intelligence bulletin the FBI distributed to some 18,000 law enforcement agencies on Wednesday, said Bill Carter, a spokesman in the FBI's Washington, D.C., headquarters.

No specific targets were identified in the bulletin, Bjornstad said. He said his department contacted what it considered potential targets, including auto dealerships, building contractors and the Port of Olympia, which exports timber.

``We have to take it seriously, and one of the reasons is that this group has claimed credit for a fair amount of criminal activity in the past several years,'' Bjornstad said.

ELF has been linked to fires and vandalism at agriculture research labs, logging operations, car dealerships and construction sites. The group has defended its actions as efforts to stop companies from profiting from exploitation of the environment.

A Web site titled ``International Day of Action & Solidarity with Jeff 'Free' Luers'' featured a list of events planned for Saturday, including protests at SUV dealerships.

Jeff Luers is serving a 22-year sentence in Oregon for a 2000 arson at an auto dealership and an attempted arson at an oil company.

I kind of figured there would be support for the ELF here and it wasn't hard to guess from whom.

The folks from ELF are American terrorists in America and can be arrested for their crimes. Since they are in America they will get the same treatment all the others who are incarcerated receive.

Aunty has it 100% right. I consider my self an environmentalist. I consider ELF whacked out idiots and dangerous ones at that.

Please do not consider ELF as representative of the environmental movement. Unfortunately, every cause seems to end up with some really goofy folks at the fringes.

Just like most abortion opponents do not condone bombing clinics, most environmentalists are appalled at the terrorist acts of ELF.

I think STLHDH20 is on to something when he suggests that we humiliate and torture the eco terrorists in the E.L.F.--and I wouldn't be surrprised if he knows where we could find some of them.

Ah, such a dilemma. In no way do I condone the property destruction by ELF or whackos of any creed. However, I really have to object to the ELF sympathizers (if that's what they were) who cruised naked on their bicycles around downtown Olympia yesterday, giving us avid bicyclists a bad name, or at least image. Sheesh, it's bad enough that we cyclists offend the sensibilities of normal citizens by wearing those damned lycra spandex bike shorts, revealing every muscular contour. (Still, it's not riding naked.)

Well, I did think of one nice thing to say about ELF. They make us moderate environmentalists seem pretty reasonable, don't ya' think?

All in all, if the local chapter of ELF stops burning down buildings and sticks with naked bike ridiing, I guess I can put up with that.

More people will die at the hands of a drunk driver in the next 24hrs. It would be nice to direct the law enforcement resource at credible threat by potential severity.

I see no reason to let up on one group, using another group's level of threat as reasoning.

If killing someone while driving drunk carried the death penalty, you'd hear no complaining from me.

Perhaps if our attention and resources wasn't constantly trying to be diverted to another country we could actually focus on domestic issues.
