KJ:
That WAS funny. Too many of us take all this waaaaay too seriously.
One of ther biggest problems we face as a nation is the polarization of both sides. Too many of us, myself included, sometimes forget that we will do just fine even if the guiy we love to hate gets elected.
I do not think I have ever voted for the guy who won the state's electoral college and was elected. Yet we somehow stumbled through. I suspect we will again, no matter which scoundrel we elect.

One advantage of sitting on the partisan fence is that you can enjoy jokes about either party. I, too, am waiting for the GOP itinerary; unfortunately, most jokes I've seen about Republicans have been pretty vicious, not that the above doesn't have teeth...

Dave- You and I agree about 7 times out of 10. I'm probably one of the guys you are referring to when you say some people take this way too seriously, although I do try to do my best at bringing a sense of humor to the table about it. I think its possible to retain your sense of humor AND be deadly serious at the same time (Bill Hicks, RIP). In fact for me, I can't think of anything more important (or funnier)than this election. "Too many of us, myself included, sometimes forget that we will do just fine even if the guiy we love to hate gets elected." My son's health may hang directly in the balance....did you read my post about OI mice being cured with stem cells and gene therapy? Anyone remember the reverse joke, told on the daily show about two months ago? Oh well....I guess we shouldn't expect too much original thought from the repuiblican side of the aisle, we might actually have to give them credit for something positive.

STh20:
I have met your son and am pulling for him all I can. He is a way kewl guy. Is he still big on all the superheroes?
You are 100% right that the religious right which drives much of Bush's policy is holding up research that might make you son's life so much better and might save untold lives. There is nothing funny about that. And I sure would never make light of that.
I was making the point that as a nation we seem to struggle along okay no matter what. Thank God for our checks and balances. I was also thinking about the fact that so often my state goes the opposite direction as my vote.
Last time, I voted for the man who got the most votes - Al Gore- and my state's electoral college did as well, yet Bush became president. Other times I have voted for the man who ultimately won Richard Nixon the first time, and my state electoral college went for the democrat. Makes me wonder how important my vote was.
I do think we need a system that awards the election to the man with the most votes.

At 15 he's more into punk rock than Wolverine, although I did lend him my copy of Entombed's - Wolverine Blues last week.
Ya think people in Florida are wondering whether or not their vote counts?
Honestly? That's the way righty wants it. They count on it....high voter turn out = a republican loss, nearly without fail.

Is funny how this swings. The electoral collage was designed to not over or under represent Urban vs. Rural states . When it was set up the country was 70% rural and 30% urban today its 25% rural and 75% urban. So the balance of power has certainly shifted. Liberals control the populations centers for the most part so eliminating the EC would futher damage the two party system. It would only work if everyone was requred to vote.

TK: I do understand the reasons for the electoral college, but I wonder if they are valid today. Why should a vote be worth more in one part of the country than another? I think that the Electoral College is an archaic institution that needs revamped. Problem is at any given time that would hurt on party or the other so the ones whose ox is getting gored fight it like hell. As far as everyone voting I think we need to got the other way an have a system where you need to prove at lease a partial grasp of our constitution and history. To become a naturalized citizen you must prove you know a bit of history and understand the constitution. If you are born here all you need to do is show up.
I think it would be nice if in order to vote you could name two of the last five presidents, one of you senators and one of your last three governors. That would eliminate about half the current voters.

Dave-- You're right, I think, about the need for a system to test voters. However, with the low voter turnout, we're probably already seeing just that kind of division. Those who are ignorant of the system probably don't vote, and those who feel it's important enough to show up can answer the questions. The devil in me wants to point out that more difficult questions would eliminate the Democrats' power base... Keith

KJ: When I made that post, I wanted to add that any sort of intelligence test would eliminate the bulk of the Republican's southern base, but I restrained myself. I promised myself I would stay above that sort of thing until someone else cast the first stone.
Honestly, I think a current events/civics test would eliminate a ton of voters from BOTH parties.

With a majority of the current and former prisoners in the US being democrats and being unable to vote and the Alzheimers epidemic with florida democrats a test would futher damage their ability to win elections. :p
