When the volcano blew the first ime in 1980 I was in college at WSU. We had 9" of ash on the ground. It was a few weeks before finals and they canceled all classes. They let you keep your grade at last midterm or take a pass fail option . I had not been to class since the last midterm as we had been fishing every lake from Pullman into BC that spring. So it was a major break for me as I had done well on the midterms. So we stayed in Pullman and partied everyday and every night for about a month. Nothing new really it was pretty much the case all four years. I worked full time to put myself through school but even then I worked in a bar.

jason,
This might be a stab in the dark, but are you former/current military?

Nope.. I'm not military and have never been. I grew up a military brat and was surrounded by the military growing up. My dad was active army and then army reserve and he nearly had a cow when I said I wanted to be an Apache gunner (which would have to be army), and tried to push me toward the Air Force. I agreed to go to college first and then decide. The vision in my left eye was borderline to get the gunner position, anyway. After a change of major and a severely outdated computer engineering at my university gave me the extra incentive to move up here to WA to be with my fiance (now my wife), I was planning to finish the degree at UW. After some miscommunication from the UW recruiter on whether or not I could be considered a resident when I had lived in Alabama for most of my life  and what it would take to get into the engineering school at UW with only half a year left to go on a degree, I've been working up here ever since. Now that I've got a house and two kids (new one just a month ago), I'm guessing the last two quarters of that degree might not happen. Oh well, I'm in an Information Services Manager position now, so I guess I can do without it. \:\)

The morning St Helen's blew the wife and I were asleep at our cabin on Discovery Bay outside the main house and my mother ran out of the asked what that explosion was and I raised my heafd off the pillow and said, "oh it's nothing Mount Saint Helens just blew up" and laid my head back down and went back to sleep got up an hour later turned on the TV and it was all over the news.

We live about 150 miles northwest of the Mountian and when blew it sounded like someone had set off about 10 sticks of Dynamite 0off outside our bedroom window.

jason,
The reason I asked was because when I was stationed in North carolina, every time a hurricane would come over we would have us a "hurri party". The store on base would immediatley sell out of beer. You can always count on finding marines doing some crazy sh!#. AHHH those were the days.
