Hair bands as a general rule sucked the almighty gobstopper BUT, there are exceptions both in terms of songs, bands and entire records.

For example the first three Y & T records are very much in the vein of say old van halen. Kind of a good time, california, rock and roll. Then, as with nearly every other band at the time, the record execs got their mits on the idea of image and made them all dress like girls and fill their songs with rock cliche after rock cliche....

Whitesnake is another band that gets pigeonholed as a hair metal band, again quite unfairly. Whitesnakes first album 'lovehunter' is really an exercise in british blues rock ala deep purple or led zep. then they followed up with 'slide it in', a terrific combination of britsh blues and american radio rock.

Can you hear the record exec in david coverdale's ear? " 'slide it in' was great but motley crue's 'theater of pain' sucked total ass and sold eight million copies in three days. You'd better start dressing like girls and shooting some heroin fast!"

Ratt - Hair Metal all the way but with semi-intelligent lyrics and a shred guitar player with a distinctive, creative guitar voice. Certainly not the best, but just as definitely not the worst band from the eighties.

I did think that Coverdale was a stud though, and always thought that red head he had in his vids was a total hottie.

What about Skid Row, or Dokken? Laughs, those were some lame bands too.

I actually like songs from most of the people/bands on this list. Go figure.

As for my most hated, it would have to be Soft Cell. Every time I hear 'Tainted Love' (which I do often because I mostly listen to the 80s station on Sirius), I want to bash the deck in with my fist. Thankfully, I always have CDs.
