I am about to buy a generator, and I need someone to wire it. I'm told it can be expensive, but less so if you can find an elecrtrician who doesn't bother with a permit. Any ideas?

Dave, my neighbor is a recently retired electrician. I'll check with him to find out how much he charges.........even retirees need a little $ now and then. He's a good guy to know........28' Trophy, fishes Westport, Sekiu, Lake Washington.........a lot.
I got a generator recently. That last 6 1/2 days w/o power was no fun starting on day 4. The only thing I need it for is for my septic pump......couldn't flush. Had natural gas water heater and stove, and cooking wasn't a problem(3-burner Coleman and natural gas barbecue with side burner.) But I gotta flush! So, I got a 2K Honda for the septic pump/frig/freezer. Sounds like you want a generator that will run your hot tub while you are sitting in it having a Kokanee.
By the way, are you going to stay home this summer and do a garden or fish all over the world instead?

WHOA THERE!!!!!!!!!!!!! The cost of an electrical permit is not that high. Hell of a lot of peace of mind knowing the job has been properly inspected. The retired guy can still do the job thus saving you a couple of bucks, and you can sleep soundly.

Snake: Hope you are healing up fast. You need to be prime for this fall on the Snohomish.
Ask your neighbor about the installation, but I guess I will go head and get the permit.
I will be staying home a bit more than usual this summer.. One trip to the Charlottes, one to Kamloops and four to AK, but spaced out pretty well.

One of my brother's lives off Cherry Valley road at your end of the street and he's installing one also. He almost lost a freezer full of fish, venison, etc. with the power outage. Luckily - we have three electricians in the family.

Mr. Vedder,
If you get an owners permit, the state says you must be doing the work yourself, to code. An electrician can do it for you, but, the state says they have to be licensed, bonded, insured, registered, having a currently licensed journeyman and licensed administrator, UBI number, and contractors license. Depending on jurisdiction, may have to have "city of ???" business license also. I'm only licensed for low volt and probably wont have the ridiculously long list above for a line voltage business until mid-late summer. My brother is a licensed journeyman, he does these all the time and I'm certain he would be interested in helping you. One thing for sure, there is a cost associated to do the install correctly, you'll probably have to change out your electrical panel to a main breaker type generator panel (unless you have one already). You'll have to come up with some list of the circuits or appliances that you want to be run by the gen. depending on how your house was wired and how many amps you're planning on pumping into the house. Whatever you decide, be safe, the feeds coming into your house could have 200 amps or more, not for the novice.
Hope this helps, I'll make sure to check in on the thread in case you have any other questions.
