Thats "smart" math. They should teach it in school.

Q: A 18 year old boy leaves the train station in Boston at 07:30 A.M on a Tuesday.. a 18 year old girls leaves the train station in Seattle at 14:30 on Wednesday. Assuming a avg speed of 35 mph, in which US city will they meet and screw their lives up forever ??

Problems are solvable, women are not. That's where the equation blows up. Just like division by zero.

"You, in the back of the class..........identify yourself and answer with a little more clarity."

You can divide by 0.1^-infinity, you can't divide by 0, although they essentially the same number. The concept is the basis for Integral Calculus, much like the Tangent Line Problem is the basis for Differential Calculus. That's what's cool about going to school as an adult: I remember all this shi%.

It's all good. Women need the money more than men so they can spend it on make-up, flashy clothes and salon appointments to disguise men from the fact they passed they're prime at the age of 20. Meanwhile the 65-year old man who lost his money to the afforementioned blister is chasing said fertile 20-year old girl around the bar with funtioning genitailia.

WE WIN!

You asked what the difference was, which implies subtraction of the two numbers according to this Poulsbo Math major......but what do I know, I didn't have to take the WASL.

Then your still wrong. 0 - 0.1^-infinity = - 0.1^-infinity. It's still as close as you can get to zero without actually being zero, except it's approaching from the negative side of the origin.

Sol

I like the quick math derivation of women. I dont think step one is a linear relationship of (time*money). I beilieve it to be an exponential relationship (time*money^2). Going through the outlined simplification boils down to (woman = problems^2).

I believe you were misled in calculus class. The basis of integral calculus is taking the sumation of infentesimal slices to determine the area under the curve of an antiderivitive equation within specified limits of integration. The lesson that should be taken from dividing by .1^infinity is that as you approach zero in the denominator, the result of the division gets exponentialy larger. Dont get stuck on the essentialy the same number bit. Think in terms of approaching zero or approaching infinity. Zero is a number. Infinity is an idea to give direction to mathematical models.

The basis for differential calculus is the change in the slope of the tangent of sequential points along the line of a multivariable equation.

Hard work and the ability to produce the wright answer produce A's at the calculus level. You can get straight A's and still not understand some of the fundamental basis for what you are doing. The mechanics of derivating, intergrating, and the change in the graphcal representation is the main lesson and the regurgatation of those mechanics is what gets A's. Of course this is all relative to your learning style.

Did you take buisness calculus or analytical geometry calculus? The math is the same for both but they take a different approach and have different application.

How about backing off the not-understanding bit, you donkey! Perhaps I don't articulate the theory to your liking, but I understand perfectly. Analytically, the area of a two dimentional surface or the volume of a solid approches it's true value as the sample thickness of the variable approches zero in integration.

I took Analitical Geometry Calculus, as well as Differential Equations and Linear Algebra. I loved studying math.

I am sure glad there are folks with brains like you folks to figger this crap out.

Were it left up to me we would still be using our fingers to count how many fish have been caught on any given day.

Mike

p.s. in my case, this year, that number (on 10 of 13 days fishing this year) is the smallest imaginable, and all one needs to do to digitally express this number is to connect the thumb and index finger in a circle.

Sol, Nofish is right. Raising a number between -1 and 1 to a negative power results in a large number, not zero. 0.1^infinity is zero, but 0.1^-infinity is infinity.

Sorry, Sol I didn't mean to sound like I was attacking you. I get that a lot on this forum. Sarcasm and attitude are diffucult to interpret in text so if you give me a mean attitude when you read, then that is what I am to you.

I thought I was trying to fill in some blanks and help you out. I'll agree that there are articulation differences between our calculus education. Therefore we are probably arguing the same point and that never goes anywhere. From my experience overconfidence and blind faith in what you "know" or "understand" can get you into trouble (I'm not just talking math).

Try teaching math or engineering and dealing with a multitude of people that think thay have it all figured out and articulate it differently. On top of that try responding with them with questions sent over e-mail (boy oh boy). You will find that sometimes you offer help and solutions and they get mad (happens all the time). I am even guilty of this. JMPE.

Nofish,

Sol doesn't have to get water to run uphill. They already figured that out in California, where water flows uphill, toward money. Math and physics become a lot simpler when you make the right connections. They didn't mention the money part when I was in college.
