Best Ways To Avoid Getting Seasick?

I've unsuccessfully tried dramamine, the patch, eating the right foods, staying on deck, getting enough sleep, looking at the horizon, etc. Anyone have any advice on how to avoid getting seasick? I'm going out next weekend and I'd rather not feed the fish again. Thanks!

Meclizine 2 ea. @ 25 mg. beginning 3 hrs. before you board), plenty of sleep, dry meals, lots of water. Stuff is cheap and OTC, and is the active ingredient in most all other sea sick med's.
Sometimes there is no avoiding the YAK if it's gonna happen.
Getting sea sick is a middle-ear issue, and med's that quell the middle ear are pretty much consistent. They will dry you up, lock up your gut and make you drowsy at times. Once you have started barfing they won't do much good, as you can't keep them down. You can place a 2 to 5 mg. valium under your tongue...it won't stop the barfing, but you won't care as much either.( NEVER to be combined with any qty. of alcohol though!!!)
I don't fish the salt any more, but if I did a Fish Whistle is sure to be in my pack. Nothing stops dizziness and vomiting like a small dosage of Fish Whistle combustible material, and it also acts a strong vestibular suppressant. The Vestibular nerve is the one that connects the ear to the brain, so if you make it think everything is fine, it doesn't know any different.
I don't have to be on salt water (or even near water at all) to get the same effect as being sea sick...but the above do work for me to stop the vomiting from severe vertigo eposides caused by an illness I am blessed with..

I can't relate or help. Never been seasick (knocking on wood). What has usually worked for me is to consume copious amounts of fermented liquid and nachos the night before followed by a greasy breakfast after 3 hrs sleep.
Usually helps to get sick before you step aboard....good luck.
Candied ginger helps also.

I've only puked twice going out of Westport in the Summer.
First time was after eating a greasy breakfast, second time was going after working a graveyard shift. There are those who have been sick and those who will be. Spending time out on the water is the only way to get used to the conditions.
I like to munch on something like pretzels, ginger snaps, or animal cookies to release any ear presure.

Marezine, 1 tab the night before, 1 in the morning, 1 in your pocket. Makes you kind of tired but it works. I get really sick without meds so I know this works.

I've hurled my share, but I have found that a beer has saved me many times when I've first felt it coming on (or is it up?).

I read you can take a few tums to neutralize your tummy, that might help. I also think that staying alert and not dozing with your eyes closed helps. Last week I felt fine all morning until I tried to take a catnap. My mouth started to water a bit...OK! time to get up!
It may be that you are just overly suceptible to getting sick. Might want to chat with your Doc to see if there are any new methods or treatments.

I've never been seasick, but watched dozens of people chum for me while I was tossing buzz bombs. Dramamine seems to want to make everyone take a nap, the biggest help I've seen it offer is that it allows you to prolong puking by sleeping through a part of the sickness. There is a prescription patch that goes behind your ear that I've seen and it seems to work really well and works for three days, requires a doctors visit though. I watched an episode on Myth Busters, and their conclusion was that a ginger pill from the natural foods section worked the best (better than Dramamine). My brother gets sick, but we used to start the season with a three day trip every spring, after that initial trip he would be good for the rest of the season (basically stay on the boat until you're sick of being sick). The number one thing that I've seen to unexplainably cure seasickness is to get into a hot pod of silvers or halibut, that always gets everybody to stop puking and enjoy themselves. Good luck, I feel for you.

I've done my share of chumming over the years. You wish you could die and know that you aren't going to....not fun. I almost always made a remarkable recovery when I had a fish on. Once it hit the boat, back to my corner to keep the chum slick running.
I've tried every known way of administering motion sickness drugs and nothing really worked - for me. As I got older and picked up more responsibilities - like running my own boat, I've gotten better.
As for the various OTC drugs, Marezine worked best for me. I'd start taking it a day or two before we left the river at LaPush. It didn't do me much good to start taking it the morning we went out. The acupressure wrist bands seem to help, too.

I've tried dramamine and the patch. Dramamine seems to work ok except that I almost fell asleep driving home after a long day and took out a road sign. Won't take that stuff again if I'm driving. Patch worked pretty good. It's really hard to say tho if it was the patch or just getting used to the water. I've seen people with the patch leaning over the side just like people without it. My advice tho would be to try the patch but stay within sprinting distance of the railing. Good Luck !

I've never been seasick, but I think it's almost a placebo effect. If you step onto the boat thinking that you're going to get sick, you probably will. Try eating some saltines and not going too heavy on water or other liquids (But if you do get sick make sure you rehydrate yourself). Don't eat the day of the trip until you are already on the boat and used to the sway of the ocean.
Hope this helps

The little patch that goes behind the ear is called Scopalomine (sp?). The secret to using it is placing it behind the ear for 12 hours before going out. My ex-wife used to get seasick (and carsick) pretty easily. She tried most remedies. Beleive it or not, the one thing that really worked were those wrist band with the little ball in them. You put them on according to the direction and they put pressure on a nerve that will reduce or eliminate seasickness. It actually worked for her! Wish they made one to go around her neck!!!! OMG did I type that outloud?? Sorry! Hope this helps!

Nothing is going to help you. Everyone get sick, some just get worst than others. For those who are easily sick, thinking about it and worrying about it will make it worst. Just like premature ejac@#$... Serious.
