It would not be possible to do today what the developers did when the Denny Regrade was done in the building of Seattle. Can you imagine, if someone came up with the idea of using water to sluice a hill into Elliott Bay, what the reaction would be today?

For those of you who are interested in the Regrade project and what Seattle was like 100 years ago, I heartily recommend a novel entitled Madison House by Peter Donahue. It is a long read, but an enjoyable one.
