Got home from a trip last night about 3 am and a huge flying beetle flew into the light above my head and fell to the ground stunned. It was about 1 1/2" to 2'" long, white hard shell on top with green stipes. The thing had curly orange attentae about 3/4" long . Probably the wierdest looking bug I have seen. . I would have got a picture but I was just too tired. Anybody have an idea what it might have been?

Not knowing you I am unsure if you should be concerned or not. It say's it's a pest of "Any thin skin fruit".

Seen one before. Actually heard it before I saw it. Strange heavy-breathing, hissing sound. Tracked it down and found a really big weird beetle.

I found a june bug just the other day on the ground at the gas station. Almost stepped on it by accident, but picked it up and gave it to the wife to hold until we got to a spot where it would be ok and let it go. Don't see them too often out here, but think they are really cool.

Thanks for the responses. I don't think it was a june bug, though who knows. Best I can tell it probably is some kind of long horned beetle. Not important, but It is cool that after 30+ years of running around here there are still lots of things around I have never seen.

Krijack,
Is this the type of beetle you saw? I found this one on my front porch today. Put the quarter down for a size reference.
Anyone know what type of beetle this is. I don't think this is a June Bug.
Brian

Check this bugger out:

http://www.puyallup.wsu.edu/plantclinic/resources/pdf/pls5junebeetles.pdf

The things you learn on the internet - beetles make up 40% of the bug species and there are more than 350,000 types of beetles.
More useless information for you. Maybe somebody can win a bar bet with this info.

Stonedfish:

Wife says that's a "Watermelon" beetle. I've never seen one before up close, but she is from Illinois, and I guess there are bunches of them there.

While I was fishing in Idaho a bunch of icky things like that hatched on our 2nd night. Big poofy red/orange antennea and big icky shells. They simply buzzed angrily out of the powdery soil, then corkscrewed up into the heavens. I was more than happy to let them pass w/o molestation.
