hey fishingfool: not trying to give you a hard time, but i think 50# is a bit over estimated. that would beat all the state and world records by at least 15 lbs!!! got a pic??

I knew somebody would come out with the elitist snob comment... A poor quality eating fish should be left in the river to feed smolt in my opinion. The chum runs that people now think are huge are but a fraction of what they were 20 years ago. Back when January was a complete stink fest everywhere on the rivers.

Piper's secret November fishing grounds... Funny how two or three, dark fiesty chum, will distract 25 guys from seeing the chrome ho's just downstream. By November I'm not usually feeling to generous to point things like that out either. I would like to add that the worst thumb blister I've had was from a chum the size of that freakshow boxer, Butterbean. It whooped my ass bad. I cried like a little French schoolgirl who just skinned her knee.

Pound for pound, Chum fight as hard or harder than any other salmonoid. I dont ever take any home, but they great for a good arm pull when nothing else is around.

IIRC, Keta is the native name used by peoples along the Kamchatka Penn. where the chum was first cataloged in the 1700's. Latin for Dog is Canis which why dogs are canines etc.
It's really not even the correct term either. Its a Russian brutalization of the Siberian Yupik(?) that actually meant "fish" if I remember correctly. Named a dog this once. Keta=dog salmon= name of a dog. Not everybody gets it. Plus they pronounce it with a short e sound instead of how the french would say with an accent ague.
Either way, they pull like heck on fly or conventional gear.

I have caught several on the peninsula here as bright as the one Zog is holdin and much bigger, some of these peninsula chum run have fish that average 20lbs especially the stream i grew up on!!! I've seen them pushing pushing thirty and chrome bright! Shoulder killers and yes, good if they are bright and ur able to keep them and the eggs are the best as well!!! A 50lb chum, did u eat a 50lb bag of mushroooms first?

I did a little research and found this: www.seafoodcanada.gc.ca/chum_salmon-e.htm <start> Pacific Chum Salmon Silver-bright, semi-bright, dark; summer; keta. Sometimes known as "dog" salmon because of the large teeth the species develops at spawning time. Oncorhynchus keta "Silver-bright" is the commonly used term for top quality ocean-run chum; the skin on this fish is shiny silver. "Semi-bright" describes a more mature fish with watermarks that do not extend below the lateral line. Chum with watermarks extending below the lateral line are commonly referred to as "dark"; the skin is gray to black with occasional red mottling below the lateral line. The flesh colour of chum salmon also varies, depending on the maturity of the fish but also, it seems, on its river of origin. Most silver-bright chums have reddish-pink flesh which loses colour the closer it gets to fresh water. Dark chums may have pink flesh, but the meat is soft and lacking in flavour. <end> I once caught a real bright chum (thought it was a BIG coho at first) in Dewatto bay on Hood Canal but most of the fish I see in Hood Canal are pretty dark olive green with the red mottling birth mark look to them.
