One by one all the rivers that I learned to fish on are now closed or closing. Stilly in April used to be money. Sky, Nooksack, etc etc they are all going by the wayside one by one. Cutting hatchery plants to help the wild fish and then closing the rivers for wild fish....WTF???

If numbers are down on the skagit/sauk and it looks like they won't meet escapement they should shut it down. Mis-management happens when they choose to keep it open regardless of the ramifications.

Hey......lets remove the one user group that cares about the resource. All it will do is extend darrington poaching season. Probably more fish killed up there in may when the river is closed than are are killed by catch and release. Will just make it easier for the poacher. And for those that think that poaching is not a problem on this river think again.

FuE% this shiat.........I think I am going to take up skate boarding or something else that is not a futile hope.

Float the NF Stilly from Trafton to Arlington in March and you'll see another local fishery being preserved.

In reality, there are a bunch of messed up things in AK. Some river systems have both comm and sport fisheries w/o an escpement goal in place ... that's pretty assinine.

If the numbers aren't going to be there ... fine, shut it down. But the state needs to make an adjustment to what remains open.

When the state says that they can't change things with the tribe due to a MAJOR change in the sport fishing scenario, then please at least ask them how the tribe made such a major increase in their fishery with no adjustment.

Politics are a nasty mess wherever you go ... the state of WA just seems to always put near the bottom what should always be first, the fish ;\)

Mis-management should be on our license plates as the state theme.

I don't think that we should be surprised, we were warned that these closures might happen and it may be the first of several to follow in the Puget Sound region. The quote is from a thread discussing the WSC meeting last November where Heather Bartlett talked about the state steelhead plan.

"The first is that because the process of writing the 4(d) rules and getting them approved will extend well into 2008 some fisheries where a "take" of listed steelhead can occur, spring chinook and summer steelhead are examples, may not be opened this year.

A second point that was made in a lively discussion of hatchery/wild interactions is that there are several rivers in the region where no steelhead fishery would be allowed if there were no hatchery fish. In other rivers a CNR fishery would exceed the allowable "take" in 3 to 5 days."

You would think it would generate some thoughts.

If the Skagit is closed I doubt if it will be the result of a tribal fisheries, WDFW, and indian casino plan to screw sports fishermen. It is more likely related to ESA listing of steelhead in the Puget Sound region.

The tribes will still be netting the fish into extinction long after we are banned from fishing all of the rivers. I have heard that the State is considering closing the penninsula rivers for salmon for several years. Will the tribes still be taking thier half and our half then? Kind of makes you think that someone is gonna have to get hurt before the rules change. If the state keeps messing with people and thier passions and livelyhoods someone probably will. -T

Very true ... a number of factors got us there, BUT ...

Let's try to keep the "healthy" OP streams from following down the same pathway.

The writing is on the wall ... someone in Olympia please read it ;\)

Word JoJo.

If the numbers are low then time to shut it down. Sucks for the fisherman and hopefully better for the fish. Cross your fingers that the fish can fight back.

I think thats what the worst thing about this situation is, we all can see whats going on but they're so tied to money nothing is going to change

I would gladly stop fishing for as long as it took to salvage our steelhead but that would mean no netting on the rivers too.

Does anyone know if its legal for the tribe to go net another tribes water?

Do you really think the tribes don't have an effect on the skagit??? Nets are in the river right now at least 3 days a week, probably 4. We don't have enough escapement to allow a catch and release fishery and yet the tribes are netting right now! That's a bunch of bullshiat! And the wild fish are already in the river. Who'd a thunk it. We are getting shut down and yet the tribes are still netting. 50% my ass!
