What rod would be best suited for drift and spinner fishing for kings, occasionaly a plug or two. I fish from the bank and usually the rivers aren't real large. Also the rod can't be to heavy in power, I would like to use the rod for silvers and chums, or maybe steelhead as well. Any help on the best rod(s) woul be much appreciated. Any other brands that work well too.

I watched a guy land several kings on 6-10 line rated certified pro fishing eggs on puyallup. It was 8.5-9.0 foot . Ive also seen smaller chums spool people on the same river. I thought kings would fight harder but the 24# I landed last year didnt run very far on the cowlitz.

Im not current on either brand. But in general a longer rod will offer more leverage and more forgiveness. There is no substitute for a drfit fishing fast action tip. Since eggs are common, you want a rod that will load and not throw off the eggs.

Since the guides are in the boats, they can get away with lighter gear than a banker. St Croix Avids are also nice rods.

One rod a tough read .
First for doing much and many the Loomis (GL-3 STR1025C 8ft 6 med/heavy Fast action) will cover all and every gig drift fishing but not the best for kings over 35lbs but it will get it done but for Kings there are better but for all others, metals, coho and more a great all around rod with many abilities!
Plugs, baitdivers, Downrigger , back bouncing the best bang for the $$$ spent (Lamais 9ft CG90DR) Classic Glass=Glass Copy of the old Fenwick Glass we have 10 of these and have not blown one up yet and use them in the salt as well off the downriggers to 150 ft! rods rock off downriggers, plugs, baitdivers back bouncing on the river there sweet and provide plenty of backbone and tip action is better then average and provide a better application and presentation in these conditons.
We land tide water Diamond backs/Sturg with them as well with 25lb Maxima Perflexion with fish over 100lbs talk about fun!!!
Another for Kings Lamai (9ft FS9MC Salmon Special) that will finish the game and landed my personal best with that Rod at over 70lbs.
Many others I hope this helps but Glass rocks in the above applications and I have 30 plus Loomis Rods sleeping when were chasing the above.
Drift fishing the GL-3 with terminal gear 1025c a tough rod to beat!

Is it that time of year again?
I love the annual lami/Loomis mudfight.

For me Personally?

I've landed big fat Sturgies on Loomis Salmon rods running 25/30 lb test.

On the other hand I've had a Lamicrap snap while casting a Blue Fox. Nothing worse than losing a perfect fishing day on the 5th cast of the morning...except driving 3 hours and being told that they don't stand by their products.

I've had good experiences with my St. Croix as well, and it was a lot cheaper than the Loomis rods I have.

if you're actually drift fishing for kings legitimately(not hoping for line rubs and tail hookups like most of the guys i see), you can get away with a fairly light rod on most puget sound rivers. they're quite a bit easier to control when they're hooked in the corner of the jaw...

i would recommend the lamiglas X86MTC as an all around drift fishing rod. the one i owned handled everything from kings to chums to summer steelhead. it's an extra-fast action, almost like a hot shot rod, so it will cast extremely light weights no problem(a big plus in fall low water conditions). if you need more power, the lami X89MTC is a touch heavier but has the same type of action, as well as 3 more inches in the tip.

It is all about those who stand behind their product and loomis is tough to beat on that. I have both lami and loomis in a wide range of length and weights but I seem to always like my nine foot loomis the best. This year I have sucked it up on bringing fish to the bank though(probably operator error and nothing to do with the rod).
Grab one of each from a buddy and see what works best in your hands is my best advise.

1025c is to small IMO for Chinook on a daily basis.

The 1086c, would be a better choice.

When drift fishing for kings the Lami X90 HCT 15-30 lb. 9' Cert.pro works for me. If I ever bust it (doubtful) I whould look long & hard at that Lami X 89 MTC ex-fast action Chum Man was talking about ....That is one great stick for drifting over big chums & kings.
