What do you guys think?
As a alumni, I have no problem with it. It seems a number of regents are opposed to this. I think it is the wave of the future for higher education. This has already taken place at other universities across the country.
So they name a building after a company rather then a person, like "Mary Gates Hall"? They've already done it with Bank of America Arena at Hec Ed. So it is OK for a athletic facility but not an academic building?
I say take the money and put up the sign.
$16 million isn't chump change. Not like firing Todd Turner and Tye Willingham for a couple $100,000 law scholarships ;\)

I'm opposed to the concept. It suggests that everything in America is for sale. Which it likely is, but it says a lot about who we are as a people, and it ain't very flattering.

I too am opposed because it's a publically owned institution and should not be for sale to the highest bidder. Go down that path and soon these same corps will be telling the school what it can or cannot teach.

We should name them after Martin Luther King Jr. just like everything else.

Fair enough. I always enjoy hearing others opinions on these things.
So, you'd turn down the $16 million to avoid having the building named "Paccar School of Business" or whatever the name would be.

Would you feel the same if they wanted to name the building "Mark Pigott Hall" in return for the $16 mill donation?
Mark Pigott is the CEO of Paccar.

I say keep the company names off of the school buildings . It`s gone too far already with sports arenas.

On the other hand we might end up with the Supreme court presented by Haliburton.

If they want to name it after an alum who is a major donor then fine but I doubt Mark Piggott would use his own money for such a porpose.

How would you feel if they name it Wazzu hall? It'd be the ugliest building on campus.

Martin Stadium at WSU is named after a Husky.

I'm with Steve. Bad idea.

I don't want my building renamed after some commercial fishing venture.

Parker,
Chicken of the Sea Building? ;\)

I guess I'm in the minority on this one, but the UW has already set a precedent for this issue. Two other UW building besides the B of A arena already have corporate names attached to them. They accepted $5 mill from Washington Dental Service just this past November.
The $16 mill Paccar donation would be used toward construction of a new building that is $15 mill over budget estimates.

It all boils down to this - I'm right, everyone else is wrong, and anyone who disputes this is clearly a dumbfuck.

OK, I said $16 million wasn't chump change. I lied.

$150 million in public donations. No strings attached to the money of course.

It's like PepsiCo's old Scoreboard Trick.

"Donate" a scoreboard to the local high school then threaten to take it away if certain supply contracts aren't renewed every year.

Now colleges are falling for it but with cash "donations" as the bargaining chips instead.

Im sure who ever wins the 'Largest Donor Contest' will be 'honored' with naming privelidges, just like our last two publicly funded stadiums.
