The Guaranteed Education Tuition Program is Washington's 529 prepaid college tuition plan. With GET, you prepay for your child's college tuition today. Your account is guaranteed to keep pace with college tuition and you can use it at nearly any public or private college in the country.

http://www.get.wa.gov/

I was considering doing this, any thoughts on the plan?

I believe it is a good plan, heck even at todays tuition at a good school it would be difficult to afford let alone 15 years from now. I have two Daughters and we have both enrolled, if you are going to do it better get moving though 'cause I think enrollment ends March 31.

I haven't seen the particulars, but the general stuff I've heard about it makes it sound like a helluva deal...and you don't even have to stay in state to use it.

Fish on...

I think it is a great idea, especially with the future costs of education. The fact you can use it for out of state schools is a great feature of the program.
I don't have kids myself but know a few folks who are using the GET program. It seems like the way to go. A hell of a lot better the 80K another buddy of mine is going to be paying off for his two kids that just recently graduated.

Agree with all of the above comments, but one thing to keep in mind is that GET only covers the tuition part, not all the other costs associated with school, such as housing, books and other school supplies...which adds up in a hurry.

May want to consider combining it with a 529 plan, which is much more flexible in that it can be used for any school related costs, you can change beneficiaries if your kid doesn't go to school and anybody can contribute to it. Some great estate planning benefits as well. Definitely worth researching.

Take a close look at that program especially those of you with young children. Those of you who's kids are approaching college age get ready. Everything costs money....even the application process adds up, 2 kids in the UC system is 50K a year. GOLDEN opportunity here for you Washingtonians take advantage of it

We have been on a plan for both of our daughters.A custom payment plan (300 units each). I works out pretty good for us, the grandparents pay for 6 payments each year(3 per child). It was 61.00 per unit when we signed up

I am not sure that its a good deal, but the wife sleeps better knowing we are doing something.

And with the payment plan, it keep the extra crap down during Christmas and birthdays. There are 7 grandparents, so at first we would get burried in presents. Now we have them make a GET payment.

Many of my clients have gone with the 529 plan. In fact, most of those who do contribute to the 529 plan are grandparents. I've got one client who contributes $50 per month for each of his five grandchildren. I always tell him I admire his generosity to grandkids. Unlike my father who gave me .25 cents on my first day of college and said, "don't use it to call me for any money".

It looks like a pretty good deal if you can buy most of what you'll need years before your kid will use it. College education has been increasing at about double the inflation rate annually since I began paying in 1994 when my oldest child began college. Since my kids attended private universities, it looks like a bargain. I am so glad to have that expense behind me.

Both my daughters are on it as well. We are signing up the in-utero one as soon as we can. There is a lot of flexibility in them as far as what you can do with the money. If you get a kid who doesn't go to school, you can use the money on another one, or private schools, out of state schools, even trade schools. Like Salmo. G said, they track tuition, which is higher than the inflation rate.

If you are a good money manager, I believe that you could save more on the average using funds, or stocks, but for most people (me included) this is an easy way out, plus it gives grandparents something to buy for the kids instead of lots of annoying toys.
