Robert Nesta Marley would have been 63 today. So lively up yourself and toast the man that, along with his muscial partners Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer, brought Reggae music to the masses. When Island records put out "Catch a Fire" in 1973, it brought the group, which had been recording together since 1963, to the world music stage. Since then, Reggae music has become the most universally recorded musical genre since rock and roll first showed up in the '50's. More about the man here: http://reggaetrain.com/artistweek.asp

Checked out Clinton Fearon on iTunes and bought a few of his songs...Sweet stuff.. UB40 is my favorite reggae band. I'll listen to two artists/groups ONLY when fishing...UB40 and Tom Petty...

Reggae music makes up about 90% of what I listen to. I have about 100 Reggae vinyls and maybe 60 cds of the music. I've done a couple of dj gigs for family and friends. I still buy vinyl. If you want to find some more music, check out Zion's Gate on Capitol Hill. Lots of vinyl and cd choices. Clinton Fearon is a top notch player. He was a session player and a member of the Gladiatiors in JA for about 15 years before he ended up stranded in Seattle while on tour. He sells out shows in Europe, UK, S. America and Japan, which, surprisingly, has a huge Reggae scene. I resally got into it after I found the Positive Vibrations show on 90.3 KEXP on Saturday mornings 9-12. The cool thing is that the shows are archived so you can listen online whenever you want. The play list is online also so you can check out who and what the tune is. I'm 364 days younger than Bob so I lively up myself for two days. Remember- Reggae music is where skank is a verb, not a noun. Here's Marley mix download for your listening pleasure: http://doctortahlsdubshack.podomatic.com/enclosure/2008-02-01T10_17_26-08_00.mp3

I love Bob's music too. My daughers and I listen to it and dance around the kitchen. It is so funny to listen to them when they are playing in the other room or something, I'll hear them sing in unison "Wy-yi-yi ---- Wy-ya-yi-yi--- Wy-yi-yi-yi-ye-yi-yi-yo-ya". They are 2 and 4 years old (That's from Buffalo Soldier if you didn't understand the lyrics). How about Matisyahu Link . Do you guys like his stuff, I don't really understand Hasidic Judaism so the lyrics don't make a lot of sense to me, but Matisyahu, is insanely talented.

Jacob Miller (RIP), another favorite of mine, once said that to obtain the true spirit of Jah and to understand Reggae music, that you need to partake of the sacrament of the herb constantly. I, personally, could not afford the food bill to go along with that.

I liked Bob Marley til I went to Jamaica and found out what kind of person he was. Did you find out he was a Mormon? Seriously, elaborate a little.

Bob was a 'rudeboy' which is a nickname for street punks in JA. He lived in St. Ann's Province then followed his mother to a squat in Trenchtown that is one of the worst ghettos in the world. She was living with Bunny Wailer's dad and Bob and Bunny became close friends. His persoanl nickname was "Tuff Gong" since when he went up side people's heads, their heads gonged like a bell. Tuff gong is also his label and studio name. He had kids by 4 different woman. Rohan, Ziggy, Ky-mani, and Damian all had different mothers. Ky-mani's nickname is Junior Gong because of his physical remblance to Bob. Bob did not know his English office father. He left JA soon after he knocked up Bob's mother, Cedellia. He took care of lots of Rasta elders, and hanger's-on at his place and took responsibility for his kids. According to information by people that knew him in JA, he treated all his kids the same. Bob was a hard man in certain situations however, the amount of false information about him far exceeds his crimes. Like alot of people from hard times, he did not put up with any disrespect or bs from anyone and if you insulted him you would pay a price. If you care to learn more about him, Roger Steffens is the considered authority on Bob Marley and his life.
