Would like to start a music thread. We have had a few music thread that discussed different things. The internet has a ton of interesting music on it that no one has ever heard. Some of it is performances by main-stream bands doing off the wall stuff, some of it is music from good bands that just aren't well known, and some/most of it sucks. I need some new stuff for my i-pod, or to plug into my Pandora mix, so help me out. Use this thread to post what you like, and what you find interesting, to expose the rest of us to stuff that we normally wouldn't listen to, or just may not have seen yet. I'll start. There are a lot of bands, who IMO have sucky studio albums. But live they have some pretty solid performances, these bands mostly fall into the Jam Rock genre your String Cheese Incidents, Widespread Panic, etc. John Butler Trio and O.A.R. are the same thing. Here a talented Hippie with long finger nails plays a cool song on his 11-string guitar. John Butler Link For those of you who are into the Reggae sound you should try OAR Night Shift/Stir it Up, the live version has Junior Marvin on it. Super cool song.

Junior Marvin is a good guitar player and played with T-Bone Walker and Ike and Tina here stateside for awhile before joining The Wailers 1977. He was the guitar player on Exodus. Here's a Reggae site I've downloaded from with no problems. There are full cds, a mix of different players on the same rythym and some new tunes: http://www.reggaedj.com/download.php

Nice reggae link, Chuck E. And nice John Butler link, RR. We just saw him play in Bellingham a couple of months ago... rocked it.
I suppose it all depends on what you like and what you want. For good old fashioned rock, I still love The Black Crowes. The album "Amorica" is where you should start (and ALWAYS go see them live if possible). For dirtier, louder, more blues-based rock, check out The Black Keys. Just a guitarist/singer and a drummer. Also a great live show. You might recognize one of their songs from a Nissan commercial. The Tragically Hip are good if you want to feel Canadian.
The MIA's album "Kala" from last year is still incredible if you can handle a more electronic sound. There is a reason Rolling Stone labeled it best album of the year.
Instrumental reggae: Jackie Mittoo on the organ or Scientist making real dub music.
Fela Kuti and Konono Number 1 both make energetic, rhythm-based music.
The Roots are great musicans that show that rap music can be skillfully done with instruments, lyrics, and flow. Mos Def, Common, and even Kanye West all do good things for rap music. Zion I out of the Bay Area are good too. And for something newer, check out Blu and Exile.
Thievery Corporation, DJ Shadow, and Kid Koala all do interesting things.
Then you've got all the undeniable stuff... Led Zeppelin, Bob, Stevie Wonder, SRV, The Beatles, etc.
I've had a Rhapsody subscription forever and really like it. My only problem is that I'm constantly listening to new things and often forget about things I've previously found, even if they are really good.
Looking forward to seeing what other people throw out there.

Yeah, I've been digging Mickey Avalon for about the last year.
I really like the Roots (staple on the workout Ipod) and Talib Kwali.
I'll try to listen to some of these bands tonight.

Fark that. Put on some Gary Moore in his 80's rock days and you have some fo the shreddingest guitar playing ever. I have been on a serious Maiden kick as well. Steve Harris is a bass god.

Tom Petty is a classic. One of my favorites to listen to. I can be in any mood and it sounds great.
UB40 is a great reggae band (Red Red Wine is probably their most famous song)
Toby Keith, Brad Paisley, Tim McGraw are all great country artists.
The Roots have some good songs as other mentioned, and Zion I as another member mentioned is a great rap band as well.
I'd also suggest some Dave Matthews band, Citizen Cope, Flipsyde, Atmosphere, Jedi Mind tricks, Jurassic 5, Living Legends, Red Hot Chili Peppers....

It all boils down to this - I'm right, everyone else is wrong, and anyone who disputes this is clearly a dumbfuck.

Nashville Pussy...seriously these guys have an AC/DC appeal to them. That's all I need to know. Lately I've been listening to Tool, Pantera, Motorhead, and massive amounts of AC/DC. Tool reminds me of what Pink Ployd did in the 80's.........solid rock that bends the mind a little.

Avid - If you're into 80's guitar shred... listen to some Cacophany, Racer X or Yngwie Malmsteen's Rising force.

Tool reminds me of what Pink Ployd did in the 80's.........solid rock that bends the mind a little. For a little more bending, try the Melvins or Fantomas.

Racer X,Paul Gilbert's band. Try also,Tony MacAlpine,Steve Vai. Mostly I'm into anything with good guitar. Frank Zappa is probably my all time favorite. Of straight rock and roll it would have to be AC/DC with Bon and Rush, old Rush, like Fly By Night to Hemispheres. But the [censored] that gets me going is like Mercyful Fate,Megadeth,Iron Maiden Priest type riffings, with a bit of Dimebag in there. But I would have to put Moore up there with anyone as far as chops and speed and good taste.

BTW I love the [censored] Melvins. I'd like to take Buzz and Dale on a steelhead trip, with Les Claypool. That would be fun [censored].
