Can't believe no one hasn't mentioned the movie sound track. Eddie kicks ass.

I love this song, especially after a few drinks.

Long nights lyrics:

Have no fear
For when I'm alone
I'll be better off than I was before

I've got this light
I'll be around to grow
Who I was before
I cannot recall

Long nights allow me to feel...
I'm falling...I am falling
The lights go out
Let me feel
I'm falling
I am falling safely to the ground
Ah...

I'll take this soul that's inside me now
Like a brand new friend
I'll forever know

I've got this light
And the will to show
I will always be better than before

Long nights allow me to feel...
I'm falling...I am falling
The lights go out
Let me feel
I'm falling
I am falling safely to the ground

One more...

Society
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pRUGvArWXLk&feature=related

Lyrics:

Oh it's a mystery to me.
We have a greed, with which we have agreed...
and you think you have to want more than you need...
until you have it all, you won't be free.

Society, you're a crazy breed.
I hope you're not lonely, without me.

When you want more than you have, you think you need...
and when you think more then you want, your thoughts begin to bleed.
I think I need to find a bigger place...
cause when you have more than you think, you need more space.

Society, you're a crazy breed.
I hope you're not lonely, without me.
Society, crazy indeed...
I hope you're not lonely, without me.

There's those thinkin' more or less, less is more,
but if less is more, how you keepin' score?
It means for every point you make, your level drops.
Kinda like you're startin' from the top...
and you can't do that.

Society, you're a crazy breed.
I hope you're not lonely, without me.
Society, crazy indeed...
I hope you're not lonely, without me
Society, have mercy on me.
I hope you're not angry, if I disagree.
Society, crazy indeed.
I hope you're not lonely...
without me.

Great movie, and very sad. What an interesting life that young man led.

I thought the movie was superb, which is usually not the case when I REALLY like a book. Good to hear Eddie back in good form as well.

brewer came from a very harsh family too. you've heard the bed wetting story. i haven't seen this movie yet. but i bet i can write, star and produce a movie too. my soundtrack would friggen rock! the main song would be the ace of spades by moterhead. played backwards. they're not satanic but intersting. use your imagination when lemme breaks in...

" BREWER ROCKS!--KICKS YOUR ASS!--SLEYS MANY HEADS!--BUSTIN HOES --WACKEM, STACKEM! "

actually all the songs would be played in reverse.

the movie would be based my youth. i hitchhike outa yakima age 14. to escape my harsh mother who forces me to pick up dog sh!t from the back yard. i then find my way over HW12 to the cowlitz. i earn money by gutting salmon for fisherman. and selling eggs to teriski's takle... then answer a ad at the barrier dam campground for a baitboy/cabinboy. it takes years of hard cabinboy work to purchase my 1st sled. i am part a pioneer in the side drifting practice and train clancy holt how to do it up in alaska. being interested in bobbers i develope a super rare technique called bobber/jig fishing. i teach it to a local called leo. he then developes a jig and names a "leo's jig".... as the story ends i, become a brewer at a brewery. as fortune would have it the enternet celebrity "the brewer" is born and is loathed and hated by many. he is known as the poster of tastless info and scorned for insensetivity. he is baned from ifish repeatedly just as bigstick has been banned from all boards. as the story ends brewer in his last years fishes with a guy named gary loomis books a guided trip. g.looms who seems to make a popular fishplole. while setting up gary's jig-bobber rig, i mention a group down south called CCA who can be the savior to the PNW salmon runs. gary then becomes world famous for his actions and saves the salmon/steelhead from exstincktion. years later he is made govenor and put on the 80$ bill.

keep in mind the sound track will rock!!!

I really like the book, and the movie was pretty good as well. However, I see the kid as an extreme self centered dumb [censored]. His parents did nothing to deserve what they got from him. Cry me a freaking river little angry rich boy..

If you have not read " Under The Banner of Heaven " its a must read. Same author. Gives you a pretty firm handle on Mormons and their history.. freaking creepy.

I read the book and kind of avoided the movie for that reason. I hear it's a good movie, but in the book that kid isn't much more than a dumbshit. His story kinda' follows Todd's sig line that used to read "stupidity should hurt." Wading across a freezing Alaska river - gee why use the bridge like ordinary people? My recollection is that he was more than a few ounces shy of his first gram of common sense. Tragic, but kind of a natural and logical consequence of trying to live off the land without bothering to become informed about how to do so first.

Maybe I'll put it on the Netflix list.

I would see Brewer's movie tho, when it comes out on DVD.

Afrer watching the movie, I grabbed the soundtrack off itunes and it was in my car for a couple of weeks until I burned out on it. Great song writing, great veddar vocals!

The only way Mcandless could have the experiance he wanted was by going out unprepared. If he would have taken a map with him, it would have defeated his purpose for venturing out. A lot of people cannot except that.

I grew up in a dual alcoholic family that divorced when I was very young.
We moved about a dozen times as kids as my single dad raised us as best he could.
I learned at a young age that you either sink or swim in this world, the choice is yours .
Too many people use their harsh childhood as a crutch.
I say get off your ass and make your future happen.

The movie?
I thought it sucked...totally.
Some utopian hippie crap.
I agree with G.
Glorification of an idealistic dumbass.
I'd nominate the character for an award alright....A Darwin Award!

I liked the book. The movie was ok. The same author wrote "into thin air", which is a book that I would recommend to everyone.

The book mad the kid sound like a spoiled little rich kid with a chip on his shoulder. Watched the movie and they made him sound more like a hero looking to find himself and blamed his parents for everything. Book seemed more realistic as I know many kids/adults like that. Another hollier than thou kid that bit off more than he can chew.
Anyone that walks off knowing nothing looking to find himself will find more than he wants in that country. Hiked it for many years after high school and it is unforgiving. Almost bought the farm myself hunting Dall in the alaska range and we were ready.

Somehow, I just don't see you starving to death, Stam.

Unfortunately for you, you seem to have some common sense when it comes to surviving in the wild....and I don't *think* you are mentally ill. Well, not any more than the rest of us.

Alas, movies are glamorous, tend to distort reality, etc, etc, etc.

In reality, the dude was a few beers shy of a 12 pack. There's really nothing glamorous about what he did. I never said he was stupid. Just ill. Ok, maybe the 12 pack was there...but some of the tops were opened...or not connected correctly.

I read the book and thought he was a dumbass. An adverturous dumbass but still a dumbass. I'm guessing he had done his fair share of hallucinogins and maybe had some weird tweaks besides that. He did indeed isolate himself but that was mainly mental isolation because he had numerous "outs".

I'd put up another vote for "Into Thin Air" over "Into the Wild".

Stam... Eddy Vedder might not write a song about you, but I'm going to !!! In fact, it will be so good he'll wish he wrote it.. and lick my foot to let him sing it !!! Of course, I'll say no.. and flat nail it all on my own. I'll donate the money to a worthy cause that you approve of. In fact, since you wont even be dead when I write and sing this song, I'll just give you the money. I'll keep you posted when I come up with the first few verses.

My dad is a dill weed. I turned out sort of O.K.. well, maybe a little less than that.
