Well......I was upland bird hunting about two weeks ago on the same property I shot the buck in September. My pointer disapeared down in the creek bed. I finally found him sniffing the carcass of a deer; all I saw was ribs at first. As I got closer I saw the rack and said to myself...No sh!t, I found my buck. There was no open season for deer at the time, so I left it in hopes it would still be there when late archery opens. Got up early this morning and recovered the rack. I did it legaly and notched my tag for the rack. I had probably walked by the deer at least 20 times in the weeks following the shot. He was just in one of those places that is blind when you walk the terrain. The tall grass had been layed down by rain allowing me to see. He had come back the mile we tracked him and died on the creek bank. It was only 75 - 100 yards from where I shot him. I guess he wanted some excercise before he died. Mile up, mile down, and down for good. This buck is a personal trophy to me and I may have it mounted if I can get a nice cape for it. This hunt will be a memerable one. It was a hunt where everything went perfect before the shot and then everything went wrong after the release opened. Well here it is. The bastard is still grining at me. Anyone have suggestions for removing the rotten flesh and skin from the skull. The thing reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeks and has big ass magots all over it.

If you are interested in having it mounted, contact a local taxidermist and they will probably have the best solution to your problem. If you are looking for one, Jeff Reeves in Wenatchee is my recommendation. www.trutolifetaxidermy.com He can order you a cape for your deer. Good Luck.

Good by you for keeping after it and combing the same area, it's amazing what a dog can do for you.. As others mentioned, either boil the head which in some cases can make a dude puke doing it or just find an antpile and toss it in it. If you leave it outside make sure to tie a rope from the antler to something secure. Animals or big birds can make them dissapear quickly... The rack is not far off from the one you posted in the other thread... Keith ![thumbs thumbs](/forum/images/graemlins/default_dark/thumbsup.gif)

A no brainer on meat care with that one.
I'd just use the meat saw and cut the scull cap off. Wear eye, ear, and nose protection. F that, full body protection.

Thanx for the suggestions. I was on similar thoughts. I have it burried to the antlers in my compost right now. Figured there is plenty of flesh eating critters in there. I might get impatient and try the boiling method. I just need to find a pot large enough. I bet a big turkey roasting pan might work. I'll check out the thrift stores around here and see if I can find something to use and throw away. I know,........ I'll boil it on Thanksgiving and woft the aroma around the neighborhood.
Has anybody ever had to order a cape through a taxidermist before? Pro G How much extra does the taxidermist you recomend charge for a suplimental cape?

His number is 509-886-3225.

The maggots should do a good job on cleaning up the head. I would leave the head exposed to flys and such, dont bury it to much. If you can keep it warm in a bucket the maggots will enjoy it much better.
Stam, likes to boil em cause its in his Finn blood, valkohantapeura aivot (Deer brain) makes good soup.

It all boils down to this - I'm right, everyone else is wrong, and anyone who disputes this is clearly a dumbfuck.
