How would you like to get a 37-percent pay raise? Seattle's mayor wants to give big raises to the city's top employees.

Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels believes the police chief, and two of the top utility directors are underpaid, compared to other cities.

But city councilman Nick Licata doesn't think there's money in the budget for that considering the current recession, "There's an element too of sending the right message to our employees who may not be receiving significant increases" Licata said.

In a committee meeting on Wednesday Licata pointed out that King County government has to make employees take time off without pay next year just to make ends meet.

Council members think top city officials should get a much smaller, 4.5 percent pay raise. The full council will decide that, next week.

Seattle's Police Chief makes about $188,000 a year, the Public Utilities director is paid $187,000, and the Seattle City Light Superintendent is paid $225,000 a year.

I am all for individuals getting to fullfill their inner most desires, and the oldest profession in the book hasn't been immune to the economic hardship, no pun intended. Some say an hour with the pleasure craft
