The tougher the better man, I went down to the caymans with some of my lower profile shimano bait casters and ended up with burnt bearings. Everything form Jacks, tarpon, and barricuda just destroyed all of my reels. Oh well though I still caught a few hahaha.

Hankster graciously offered to sell me a couple of his Avets. I'm picking up a 2 speed MXL and a one speed Sx. That should have me covered .

I don't know Larry well. We have chatted on the phone a few times, but we have never met.

anyone here see the show dahlberg did in making his own mold? he was making his own tarpon jigs. kinda like the crippled herring or zinger. except his was made from a poured plastic resin. brewer was fascinated by what he was showing and explaining. he then takes those jigs to south america for tarpon. he ties one on and drops it down and starts jiging...... WHAM! TARPON ON!!!

The Brewer:

I too watched that show where Larry made his own line-through-the-center jigs. I only watched half, but in that half he was making them from lead, which is kinda dumb as Buzz Bomb and Zzzingers are such great lures. I know they wil work on tarppon and plan to bring a bunch next time.

From my expirence tarpon that are on the prod will eat almost anything. (I have jumped more than 20 on the Coast Hawk jig he was showing at the start of the program, and it truly a silly looking lure that resembels no living thing. When they are tuned off damn little will appeal to a tarpon. Kinda like many of our fish.

The idea of a slower sinking zzinger type lure does sound like a good one.

I was also thinking about you Vedder and Ryley while watching that show last night. His shop looked cool.

DV, to bad you missed the 2nd half of that episode. LD explained that fishing a lead style jig on tarpon could be tantamount to suicide. having a 3-5 oz lead flying back at you is very dangerous. i've been hit in the face by pencil lead, that really smarts! getting clubbered in the cranium w/a 5oz crippled herring might slow a guy down.

I see the point, but he was stressing that a sliding jig would prevent some of the getting smacked by the jig. And we all know the Buzz Bomb and Zzinger are sliding lures. Still once the rod loads and the momentum is coming your way that sliding jig is going to slide to the hook and then come back lat ya. He has a good point about a jig the same size but much lighter dropping slower and hurting less when it whacks you

My worst self inflicted whack was whne I had the bright idea of trying to toss a ¼ ounce jig with my fly rod. I hit myself in the back of the head so hard I went to my knees and saw funny spots and stuff for a few seconds. That might not have been my dumbest move ever but it’s in the top half.

yes DV your right about the slider jigs he was making. anyways good luck on your tarpon reels. brewer may never ever get to travel and fight the mighty tarpons.
