Born in WA; lived here my entire life. 40th reunion summer of 07. Caught my first steelhead in 70. Yeah, a late bloomer, but no body in my family fished, so I didn't even know they existed until then.

An oldie but a goodie:

A Texan, a Californian, and Oregonian are out riding horses. The Texan pulls out an expensive bottle of whiskey, takes a long draught, then another and suddenly throws it into the air, pulls out his gun and shoots the bottle in midair.

The Californian looks at him and says, “What are you doing? That was a perfectly good bottle of whiskey!”

The Texan says, “In Texas, there is plenty of whiskey and the bottles are cheap.”

A while later, not wanting to be outdone, the Californian pulls out a bottle of champagne, takes a few sips, throws the champagne into the air, pulls out his gun and shoots it in midair.

The Oregonian can’t believe his eyes, “What the heck did you do that for? That was a perfectly good bottle of champagne!”

The Californian says, “In California, we have plenty of champagne and bottles are cheap.”

So, awhile later, the Oregonian pulls out a bottle of Widmer Hefeweizen. He opens it, takes a sip, and then chugs the whole bottle. He then puts the bottle in his saddlebag, pulls out his gun, and shoots the Californian.

The Texan, shocked, says, “Why the hell did you do that?!”

The Oregonian replies, “In Oregon, we have plenty of Californians and the bottles are worth a nickel.”

If the Oregonian had followed any of the gun threads, he'd have known the ammo was worth a dollar a round if he could find any. He should have "peted" the californian

I just happen by on a Sunday morning see a thread that might be of some interest, as I will be at my Washington home over Memorial day. And it turns into a rip on the Californian love fest? We have been down this road before it is so pedestrian. Anyway I will stock up my Patron at Costco in Ca. before I leave again. And Lord knows I promised to pick Jerry one up a year ago. Maybe it will happen this year. As for you rippers, keep ripping, it is always funny to find out where people were born and where they ended up..

Most of the people who speak in broad generalities are just exposing their ignorance.I know you mentioned you once lived down here, by choice or not it was still your residence. so I think I will just let this go, and go sit on my deck and watch the cruise ships go by on memorial day. The most interesting thing of my last 4 years as a homeowner in Washington is how kind and accepting most everyone is up there. To coin a phrase that one well known member once used.... Of course most of the people you meet in WA are friendly and accepting of newcomers - - because they are immigrants themselves.

When I was a student and young man, 90% of the people I knew were also from WA. Today, over 50% of the people are meet have immigrated here. The demographics have decidedly changed.

I never heard any CA bashing until the 1980s when it began to be popularized by a now long-gone Seattle Times reporter Emmet Watson. The issue was only partly that a lot of Californians were moving into WA. The rub was this:
"The weather is crummy, always grey and rainging." Uh, why'd you move here?
"The wages are lower than in CA." Uh, why'd you move here?

And then there was the direct adverse effect, which you may be a part of as a WA homeowner. Folks from CA sold their CA residence for what amounts to a small fortune here, then move to WA, plunk down cash for a premium residence, thinking it's a bargain, but effectively driving up real estate prices for locals who have to come up with the money off the local economy.

Of course there are generalizations and stereotypes, but they have factual foundations, not surprisingly.

Enjoy the view on Whidbey and understand that it used to be remote and sparsely populated . . .

Two shocking things here - I didn't know you were so old and I didn't know Hankster was your son.

I make as much fun of our state as anyone else on this board, mostly because we do have some ridiculous things that go on down here, but all places have their own quirks, like state run liquor stores. I think I got us back on topic, for now.

It cracks me up that this state thinks that keeping stores open longer and building new stores is going to bring in more revenue. Its the same folks buying the same amounts of booze but now they can shop a little later at night and not have to drive as far to get it...
