Digging Puget Sound "ducks" is one of the PNW activities that should be on any avid outdoorman's local "bucket list".

Can't think of any better excuse for grown men to get out and roll around in the sand and muck and at the same time gathering some good eats. Given the price of geoducks at local fish markets successfully harvest a limiting on geoducks is one of the few of our outdoor activities that actually "pays".

My oldest son and I enjoy exploring various beaches looking for new digging opportunities. With some poking around it may surprise some how many places there are to successfully dig a "duck" or two.

I still think they are myth dreamed up by Vedder, however my tummy says differently having fried up a bunch of mythical clam steaks for dinner tonight.

Talk about tender.

While they are a lot more work to prepare, Horse clam necks, when soaked in very hot water for several minutes to allow fairly easy removal of the skin, then beating the heck out with a meat mallet to tenderize , they are as tasty as razor clams when gently cooked in a little oil after they have been seasoned and dredged in flour.

Any scrap pieces of either above mentioned bivalve go in the blender and gets chopped up for chowder or fritter fixings.

Waste no clam.

Well, tonight we ate the second helping of 18 dug yesterday. Took 5 kids with me and they loved it, every part of it, from the long walk, to the glory find of shows, to getting down on their bellies hands searching for the shell, and the double and triple teaming to get the prize to the surface. And of course the walk back with people on the beach looking at them in their sand covered bodies left smiles on their faces for hours. Of course the little nicks and scrapes from shells and barnacles were wounds of pride.
