I bought a '71 Superbeetle for $200. that had been sitting for 3 years. I cleaned out the gas tank, put in a new battery, points and plugs and it fired right up. It runs a bit rough but it runs.
The woman I bought the bug from brought in an Empi 'silicone wires red copper' (that's what the label says) plug wires and Compu-Fire Electronic ignition system that were bought for the car but never installed. Both parts boxes have the following: "Legal only for racing vehicles whch may never be used upon the highway. Not applicable or intended for street or highway use"

Huh? WTF - is this for real and, if so, why would this be true?
I'm not concerned about getting a ticket but just curious.

Chuck---if you install that stuff you'll not only double the horsepower but you'll also tripple the fuel mileage!

So - it sounds like putting it up on craig's list is the best option. I really don't care about doing anything other than getting the bug street legal at this point. Now that I've rousted the mouse out of the rig, stripped out most of the interior except the seats, I can fix the battery and rusted out floor.
It came with a new, uninstalled headliner, window seals and various other new parts. I couldn't pass up the deal as I could part it out for more than I paid.
Next thing to do is bleed the brakes as they don't act right. Then I'll get it licensed.
Thanks for the info. Bucket-I'd give you a ride but you may not be able to get out of it. I don't need you stuck in my bug. The mouse was bad enough.

Inside or outside?

This is my third one. I bought a '56 in '71 to take my wife out on our first date. It was fine for running around Seattle until a drunk ran into it with a Cadilllac when it was parked in front of my house.

I have tons of experience with Volkswagens. Had 13 of them up to this point, and the hard lesson I had to learn is.... Only buy the inexpensive Bosch tune up parts! At one point I had some high dollar racing spark plugs in my race car (mini stocks at Monroe) and it just quit running right out of the blue. Put an old set of Bosch plugs in and away we went. Same story with my brothers car,,, Just quit running one day went over switched all the autolite parts out for Bosch and away he went. Its weird, but the inexpensive Bosch stuff works best!

that warning is a pretty generic catch-all(ever notice how every single piece of fishing tackle you buy these days has a lead warning on it?). the only place you'd probably ever have to worry about something like that is in california.

Setting the valves would also help. Number 3 exhaust needs a little more room so it doesnt burn up.
