Hey Hankster remember when we were having that cold streak last winter and you opined that is proved global warming was bunk. Sooooo, I guess now you think it's for real? This has been the hottest summer I can remember.
Obviously neither a cold spell nor a hot spell proves anything. Just saying . . .
A real concern is local river temps. A few years back the Snohomish hit 70. Somewhere around that temp spawning success drops and salmonid mortality increases dramatically. If this hot spell keep up the Snohomish pinks and later the coho may be in trouble. I alos seem to recall that Frasier River reds had temperature issues a few years ago.

Alsea River hit 70* today, and I'm sure most other Oregon coastal systems are in that range as well. 101* at the hatchery this afternoon as I put sheets of plywood on a roof...

Well, at your age, that shouldn't surprise anyone. Cowtilla, 2004 I believe... 103 in the shade at Blue Creek and we had ugly hot for 6 days that time. We're not even close to that yet. We have had more hot and dry weather this spring and summer than any year I can remember - and I suspect I can remember a bit longer than you. I'm to lazy to do the work to get all the comparative data but I am stil certain this will go in the record books as one of our hottest and driest. Check the forcast for the next week. I'm pretty sure this will exceed six days and that's on top af a very warm dry spring.

I would agree with you Marsha, but then we would both be wrong.

Warmer today... in the shade of my yard, on the bank of the Alsea River.

"how cold and snowy this winter was"
It was a wet winter not a cold one. Seen a lot colder winters but the colder it is the less it snows. (I'm sure that thought will blow some gaskets)
Supposedly we are heading into another El Nino which won't be good for fish. Not the type of fish we are used to anyway.

Twitch:
Have you visited the ODFW research on a trib of the Alsea? I was there last week. It's damn impressive.
They are doing research on a number of factors that effect our salmonids. It looks like they could be doing some research on the effect of hot water today. Do you know the rivers temp today?

You must be referring to The Oregon Hatchery Research Center, up Fall Creek, at the site of the old Fall Creek Hatchery (coho). Been there a time or two We actually work with them quite a bit. You should have stopped by, I work at the hatchery on the north fork, just out of Alsea. Better yet, one of these days during the winter, you should stop by. We can dunk a few of those jigs I sent you pictures of for your last book (the darky buck with the brass bead purple jig and pink worm is one) Water temp today finally hit 71*. Didn't break 70* at all last summer. Temps drop off to about 64 at night, and stay cool until around 11:30 a.m., then ramp up quick. Started treating for buggy uglies today

It all boils down to this - I'm right, everyone else is wrong, and anyone who disputes this is clearly a dumbfuck.

the colder it is the less it snows. I think that's what was supposed to blow some gaskets............and that much is true. It doesn't snow where it gets REALLY f'n cold. Antarctica IS the biggest desert in the world, you know. Oh............sorry. Didn't mean to interrupt the whole "I sell aircraft parts for a living ( insert your profession here) , so you should listen to MY dissertation on global warming" thing going on here. These threads are way better than the hook wars threads ot the jig wars threads.

This issue has been politicized by both sides. It is hard to know who to trust especially considering both sides have agendas surrounding the topic. I heard this guy speak about global warming. He seems to be on track to me.
http://www.ac.wwu.edu/~dbunny/research/global/glacialfluc.pdf
I will condense it for ya. Prof Esterbrook says the planet has gone through 20 heating and cooling cycles in the last 500 years, over all showing a warming trend through the cycles. By way of percentage the warming cycles hasn't been more since the industrial revolution, than they were before the industrial revolution. To me this tends to debunk global warming as the LWWJ's define it, and makes it appear to be a natural occurring phenomena that we can't do anything about.
There is another scientist (can't remember his name) who has been studying the solar cycles as they pertain to global warming. Apparently he has been able to accurately predict these types of heat waves and cooling trends. I would like to read more about his work if anyone know his name I would appreciate it if you would forward it on.

Um, you do know what "below normal temperatures" means don't you? We hit below normal about 50% of the time. I've lived here my entire life and seen much colder winters than last year.

Mt Shasta glaciers are growing because of increases in snowfall on the mountain. One of the impacts of climate change is increased precipitation. For a while, that will be snow on the top of Shasta because of its height. At lower elevations, more rain and less snow.
