I was pretty close to being settled on a Ford F-350 Diesal, but after research it looks like these motors are not too reliable, well at least it seems to be about 10 complaints to 1 compliment. Now I see Ford is coming out with their own Diesel for the 2011 models, which probably means they have given up on International Harvester.
I am now looking at a GM Duromax or Dodge Cummins. I plan on towing a large 5th wheel with it. Do any of you have experience with the Duromax or Cummins Diesals? Is Ford as bad as the research shows?

Thanks. I'm in the industry, I see it everyday.......... Fords motors suck... Duramax is solid, Allison tranny is solid but cosmetics are rough after time Dodge makes an excellent 5.9L (2006 and previous) the 6.7L is a great motor so far though, love the jakebrake option. Tranny's can be known to be weak from time to time though. Winner in my book is the Chevy Duramax. I bought one of the first ones in this area and drove it for 30K miles, was a solid truck but had a couple glitches with the motor that they've since worked out, mine was a 2001.... If I bought one again it would be the Chevy... Also, if you are not buying a new one give me a shout... I'm a GSM at a Used Car/Truck Superstore and we have bunches of what you're looking for in slightly pre-owned stuff... Keith

NEW Ford motors suck. I got the last of the goodies, an 03' 7.3L stroker...everything since I wouldn't wish on my Ex. Not a problem, and 21MPG!
Cummins is a solid motor...but the only solid thing about Dodge. I think the rest of the parts from the Dollar Store. We've gone through 2 seats, and a steering wheel in 5 years with our work truck. Not to mention a LOT of repairs. Thanks for that gem D.A.S.
Duramax...decent stuff too, and they ride nice, but don't be fooled by the "Allison Transmission'... its not THE Allison tranny, one made by them, but a scaled down rec. truck sized version. Still good however.

Thanks for the info. I don't want to buy a motor with a history of problems. The 6.4 that was introduced in 2008 (I believe) appears to still have issues. When I discovered that Ford was sh$t canning International Harvester and developing their own motor that pretty much said a lot about the problems with International Harvester. Too bad, I like everything esle about the Ford. Oh, and another issue with Ford is the fuel mileage. It is the worst of the group. Looks like Duromax has the most pulling power, and that is what I am looking for.
I like the Dodge, but my experience with them is they have good motors, but everything else falls apart before the motor can wear out.
Keith, I will send you a PM. I am more interested in new, primarily because I am one of those people who keeps vehicles until they die, but I have an open mind.

I've got an '07 Dodge with the last of the 5.9 Cummins. The only real concern I have about the truck is the ball joints. They're a known weakpoint of the Rams,but they also have a medium duty diesel engine sitting on them. The Cummins is about 1200lbs of cast iron. The balljoints shouldn't be an issue,but they are. There are aftermarket replacements that will outlast the truck though. Both the Dmax and whatever Ford decides to use that year are light duty engines. You ever wonder why Ford offers the Cummins in their F650 and up? In the span of 8 model years,Ford has used 4 different engines. In '03 you could still get the 7.3,as well as the 6.0 From '04 through '07 you could get the 6.0. From '08 through '10 you could get the 6.4,and in '11 you'll get Fords in house 6.7. Not really confidence inspiring. The Cummins also has the flattest torque curve of any of the diesels. It makes peak torque at 1600rpm and stays within 10-15ft-lbs of peak torque all the way to 2800 rpm. Essentially, at any speed you're running down the road, the Cummins is making peak torque. The Dodge trannys since '03 are pretty bulletproof...unless you need to run 100hp over stock. The 48RE that was behind the 5.9 actually has fewer TSBs and recalls than the "mighty" Allison. The 68RE thats behind the new 6.7 has proven to be very reliable as well. Dodge transmissions are a non concern anymore. The 68RE has double O/D and the factory exhaust brake is awesome. The exhaust brake blows the grade braking of the Allison out of the water. Dodge has always been the red headed step child in the truck marketplace. They've come a LONG ways the last 8-10 years.

Love my Dodge. Well except for the Balljoint issue as previously mentioned. Why they'd put them on a 4x4 truck without grease fittings is STUPID
You can get more power through aftermarket goodies with a dodge than the others too

I like Dodge. My comment is based on my wife's Jeep Liberty that we traded in last year. That sucker had 260,000 Kilometers on it, ran like a top, but absolutely everything else was falling off the thing. I had similar experiences with Dodge vehicles at work. Ran great, but again, the rest of the car fell apart. I know the tranny issue has been fixed on the Dodge truck. Hopefully someday Ford will get their act together again.
Still Leaning pretty hard to that GM or Chevy Duromax 3500 HD. I will start looking after the middle of the next month. I have to get the timing of the RV purchase in sync with the sale of my house, which hits the market right at the first of the year. Need a truck first, though.

I just bought a new GMC 2500HD w/ Duramax-Allison combo.
This is my second Duramax. My first one was a 2002.
All I can say, in the short time I've owned the new one, is awesome.
Currently getting 18.8 mpg on the highway and it will only get better as it gets "broken in." (480 miles on it now)
My previous Duramax was getting 20+ mpg on the Highway.

Not sure about this ball joint scare. I am a Dodge master tech, 18yrs experience. back in 94 when the new body style trucks came out the ball joints were designed to be facing up, with no grease fittings, when the seal failed, water would run in them and cause them to fail prematurely. I saw them fail as low as 15k mi. and every truck either needed them or was going to need them. starting in 2000 they changed a few things and made the ball joints 95% more durable. Mainly pointing them down so that water could not collect inside of them and giving them a better seal. I have seen a few of them fail also but only a fraction of the previous design. This same general design has carried all the way through to the current models. On rare occasion we will see an actual worn out ball joint. What usually happens is that someone who knows no better will put a prybar under the tire while the wheel is off the ground and pry the tire up. at this point you can see about 1/8" of vertical movement, and that would be on the high side. I have tested this against trucks that have less than 1 mile on them and there is still a small amount of vertical movement. As long as there is no lateral(grab wheel top and bottom and wiggle) movement there is nothing worn. I cant count how many times Lester Schtaub or the Poop Boys have sent customers to the dealer to get their ball joints fixed(under warranty). Granted there are a few failures, very few.
