It has been a long time since I have heard people actually clapping at the end of a movie. I thought it was excellent and would have walked out and bought a ticket for the next showing if I didn't have my kids with me.

It's a spectacle, and I mean that in the good way.
You go to see it because someone dropped $500M, and for a cool $8 (matinee) price, you can enjoy it for 2.5 hours...
Art direction and design is amazing. Underlying technology is undeniably the best-of-breed.
But as a story, it's 1 part Aliens (complete with director and actress) + 1 part Dances with Wolves (agree with Irie on that). If anything I was disappointed that there weren't any new plotlines to be found here.

Unobtanium? Really? Come on Cameron. LAME!!!! Shouldn't it now be Obtainium? Haven't seen it yet, but that's about the only thing I've heard people complain about. As for the script being weak - who cares. I hope to see it soon!

"who cares" and "how many fresh polot lines are actually left"...
Me, and an unimaginably large number.

Our local fish wrap critic gave Avatar a 2 outta 5 star rating. Me thinks he would probably dismiss the Grand Canyon as being dry and dusty with little vegetation; basically, a vast emptiness. Four of us saw the movie on Christmas Day and all of us thought we got our money's worth. That's eight thumbs up! Avatar is a genuine spectacle with elements of Dancing with Wolves, Star Wars, District 9, and Lord of the Rings in it. I tried to watch the animated feature "UP" the next day and could hardly stay awake...

Just saw it...3D Could be the Star Wars of this generation. Beyond awesome effects. The symbolism was omnipresent. Rain Forest destruction. Colonialism. Little Big Horn. The gunship with the Chinese dragon nose art. Sigourney's avatar even had her Alien tee-shirt. I'm not much of a movie junkie, but might have to see this again. Oh, and hot Latina chopper pilot
