MLB doesn't have anything to do with the Hall of Fame, it is independently owned and operated. As for the steroid era, it is very clear that baseball turned a blind eye to the use of steroids because fans were flocking to the parks, tv viewership was up, and life was great. However, the player's union also did nothing to help the situation as their stars were getting huge contracts and even some middle of the road players were scoring deals due to the juice. The players union would never have gone along with testing if the feds hadn't got involved, the union was more than willing to let its members use steroids and put their health in jepardy all in the name of membership dues.

Pretty tough to erase stats and penalize someone for an activity that there was no rules or regulations about prior to the act. I know that steroids were and are illegal but how many chances did Strawberry, Gooden, and Steve Howe get for illegal drug use?

As for Pete Rose, Pete would be back in baseball by now if he hadn't been so defiant all these years. MLB has a ton of dirt that they have never released on Pete and it supposedly doesn't show Pete at Bible study.

KK, since there was no steroid policy and neither MLB or the MLBPA was interested in having a steroid policy at that time, their really isn't much that can be done about the rampant use of steroids during the 80's and 90's. Unfortunately,since steroids are an illegal drug their use cannot be handled any differently then anyone else's drug problem. MLB never tested Howe, Godden, or others for drugs either. They were caught by authorities and then dealt with by MLB.

It is what it is, the 90's will be known as the Steroids Era. Maybe the best thing to do is just put in a wing for the steroid users at the Hall of Fame.

Hasn't anyone else noticed that that big "Home Run Race" just happened to happen the very season after the year of the baseball strike, when there was no season and everyone was pissed at MLB and they wanted to bring back fans?

Pete Rose had 4000 + hits. He should be forgiven for his gambling addiction AGAINST his own team after he is dead. Then they can let him in the hall of fame. And IMO he should be there for his accomplishments as a player. Charlie Hustle. And a guy who never came clean on what he did.

As for the steroids,it has ruined the credibility of the game of baseball. I hope it gets back on track someday. When I think of the greats of the game,it saddens me to think that the all time home run leader cheated and took roids. A-rod has used them. Manny Ramirez. Mark McGuire .


As a kid my hero was Ricky Henderson. Did he juice? I know Ted Williams didn't. The greats will always be the ones who did it with natural ability. It's a damn shame.

Drugs in sports means publicity. And in a celebrity world there is no such thing as bad publicity. Major league sports in the US doesn't care about drugs. If they actually did, they need only look to pro cycling for a clue: Pro cyclists are randomly drug tested frequently. And cyclists who test positive receive a 2 year sanction. That's two years without a paycheck in a sport that requires continuous training to remain even slightly competitive. It's very clear that major league sports in the US doesn't care about drug use.

Then again, going off topic, major league sports in the US doesn't give a damn about crime either. Look at the number of active ML football players who are guilty or charged with murder, manslaughter, negligent homicide, etc. Michael Vik got treated worse for torturing and killing dogs than his counterparts who beat women and kill other people. ML sports in the US can't see past the end of a dollar bill.
