Did a short float on the Kalama this morning from Slab Hole to Modrow. About a half mile up from Modrow while drifting our gear through a long slot, I turn around and noticed we were being followed by this little girl. She swam behind us for about 100 yards and was actually gaining on us. She only left the river when I picked up the sticks to reposition the boat.

Other than that, we went 0 for 1 with a good take down that didn't stick on a green pirate hotshot.

you probably would have needed to let her go if you caught her anyways. the doe being wild and all.

Goofy critters!

I love studying deer or in your case, being studied. Just when you think you have them figured out they go and pull a stunt like that.

Good stuff.

Bingo... Quite a few of the SW WA bucks tend to drop their headgear in mid January.... The higher elevation bucks will pack until mid February most times....

did this buck just walk into the river for a swim?

the reason for this ? is i've witnessed twice strange deer behavior while fishing. once on the kalama i was fishing on this rock bluff below a home that was very close to the river road. this doe comes through the trees, near feet from me and jumps into the pool i was fishing. it was shocking, i thought i'd see a couger come next. this doe crosses the river and continues it's run into opposite forrest. still no pursuer. i actually looked to see if a couger had stopped it's chase when i t saw me. it was actually a strange scene.

I think he wanted in the boat but I think it was the wrong boat..We both would have been swimming, hopefully he found his masters boat who left him at home or in the truck that day.

AP and I spooked a herd of Elk on an OP river one misty morning. They trotted along the bank for a while as we floated by and then jumped into the river a short way below us and swam to the other side. It was pretty cool to watch a dozen or so animals powering through a substantial river as if it was standing still. Definitely surreal.

I was enamored with the event just long enough to realize I should have been pissed that they jumped into a pretty juicy looking slot that had to have been holding a fish or two.

I had a close call with a moose about two or three years ago on a skinny section of my home river in AK. Coming through a series of blind corners, a decent sized bull launched off of a high bank and into the river just as I rounded the bend wide open and drifting sideways through the turn. I had just enough time to cut inside and miss him by a few feet, probably less. Not sure who would have made out worse in that ordeal. Glad I didn't have to find out.
