No brand loyalties here I just want to hear from the guys who have been doing this for a long time whether or not they think the GLX or IMX is worth double the cost of an XMG in an 1141 or EXS96LL. Somebody that has been free-drifting almost longer than I have been alive told me the rod makes a big difference and I was just hoping for some other opinions before I go load up on a bunch of 500 dollar spinning rods. I am very new at this, and feel like free-drifting is more luck than it is skill and would like to learn whatever I can to "feel" like I am actually detecting the bite and setting the hook instead of thinking, "bottom, bottom bottom, snag or maybe is a no, snag, bottom bottom" Thanks, Isaac

I always say get the best you can afford, The good stuff isn't cheap and the cheap stuff isn't good. But for freedrifting you could probably get away with a cheaper rod without giving much up. I got some sage 10'6 flyrods and had them tied up as spinning rods and they work awesome. I have never used an xmg though. Freedrifting is not luck most days. It takes a lot of skill and time doing it to be good at it. Keeping the boat going the right speed and not getting pushed in towards the bank or away from it. Knowing the river well enough to know this corner up ahead will push you a certain way and have the boat positioned right to get through it while keeping the baits running just right. Keeping the boat drifting just right for everyone else while you retie or rebait your line. All that takes time and skill, but I would rather be lucky than good anyday, best you can hope for is a little of both.

I'd go with the XMG's...but if you think you're paying half-price for an XMG vs. a GLX, then the GLX's must cost about $750.00...

XMG's are $249 at most shops these days, I believe. In terms of XMG vs. IMX, etc. I have owned both (XMG EXS 96L and STR 1082S IMX). I still own the 1082S. Main reason I got rid of the XMG is length...XMG is not offered in anything less than 9'6". I like the feel of a 9 ft rod much better. In terms of sensitivity, I think the XMG and IMX are very comparable, and not sure the IMX is worth $150 more unless ya gotta have a 9 footer like me. Hope that helps.

I just ordered a 9'2" XMG. One model is under 9 feet long. Check the Lamiglas web site.

Sensitivity is never an issue when fishing out of a moving boat if one is boondogging, side drifting, or free drifting. I'm pretty sure one could fish with a Sawyer wooden oar and still hook and land a steelhead when using these techniques.
To me, it's the feel of graphite (mush, spongy, whippy) and the weight of the graphite that push me towards a particular rod.
Once you match the proper action of the rod to the technique being used, it's kinda up to you as to what rod is the "best". It's whatever feels the best in your hands.
I've fished all three and am not a fan of the XMG's. They just don't "feel right" when fishing them. The rods are built well, and there's nothing wrong with the graphite- other than I just don't like the feel of them, so I don't use them. No other valid reason. The GLX is WAY too brittle and WAY too damn expensive. I don't like the lack of quality in the "craftsmanship" of the IMX, but the weight of the rod and the feel of the IMX graphite works well for me. Conversely, the GL3 1141 also just feels "wrong" when I use it. Just don't like that graphite in that particular rod.
Never tried an XST in a 1141 or 1082, but I suspect it compares to the GL3 in feel and weight. I do have an XST 1025 and it doesn't really compare in feel to the IMX 1025. I still go to the IMX 1025 over my XST 1025 as my primary rod.

Have both the Loomis GLX 1141 and the Lamiglas X96LLS...both setup the same...Stratic 2500, braided 20# line.
To be really truthful, I can't really tell a difference.......at the current prices........Lamiglas all the way.

Fished the xmg for a day and didnt quite see what all the hype was. I compared it side by side with a gl3 of similar statistics, and thought the gl3 was more sensative. The xmg was extrememly light in the hand though, and had a good feel.
An 1143imx would blow any of those xmgs out of the water. Of course they are 150$ more too.

AMC Pacer or Gremlin, possibly Ford Pinto or Chevy Vega...
Until one understands the process' of what/how each modulus graphite is rolled/baked and the properties of taper and scrim usage, the point is moot. All of the rods will fish almost the same as they are all in the upper realms of "quality rods" we are currently afforded.
The 1141 thing is very intriguing as it's popularity never seems to wane. If I were a crappie or sunfish angler I'd spring for one in GL2. Get a high moduli 9.5' 6# fly rod wrapped up and you're in the money zone, as that's what that rod is anyhow.
XMG... or XST.

I just ordered a 9'2" XMG. One model is under 9 feet long. Check the Lamiglas web site. Hey Dave - I think he was asking about spinning specifically? Shortest in the XMG spinning lineup is the 92M at 9'2". There is an 8'9" XMG, but it is casting.

Well said here Parker... The 1141 isn't made to feel good in any rod application when used in higher flows hence larger leads.... Fishing larger leads will give this rod a spongy feel in any of the 3 models listed, when fishing heavier leads to me is a good time to bump up to the 1082... But the 1082 will fish the smaller leads just as good as the 1141 and diminishes that sponge feel.. Only problem I have with a 1082 is if I get a ripper bite and set the hook hard I've popped fish off on 8lb leaders where that's nearly impossible with the 1141 as it absorbs the hookset better.... As far as XMG vs IMX, hands down the IMX is a sharper rod to the feel. To me the XMG feels very close to the GL3 of the Loomis line... GLX, well I've had a couple and got rid of them. To me there wasn't much if any difference in sensitivity with the IMX but the GLX as Parker said is much more brittle... The GLX is the only rod I've had to pick splinters from my face after a hookset.... So overall winner for me, all around rod would be the IMX 1082S. It's the most well rounded rod. Keith

i'd say LHS, but they ain't made any more, so i'll have to go with XMG by default.
once you get up over the $200 mark on rods(don't include loomis here, their markup is probably $100 over everything else anyway), you enter the area where you really aren't gaining much in performance, but rather in "finish and trim"(e.g., guides, wrap quality, nice cork, etc).
that said, it isn't the arrow, it's the indian...of course, having high end arrows doesn't hurt a bit.
