Need to find a local (Woodinville/Snohomish) exhaust shop. My 05 F-150 has a bad catalytic converter and the dealer is quoting me $1,300. Looking to find a shop to get a better price (and quality work).
Thanks

Bryon,

Try Woodinville Auto Repair right up the hill from my house by AM/PM. Norm is a fisherman and is very fair. Anything I can't do myself goes to his shop and they can typically turn you around in 24-48 hours.

If you are getting the check engine code PO171 or PO174 do a Google search and it will tell you how to fix it. It is usually rectified by cleaning the MAP sensor, a vacuum leak of some kind or a fuel filter that needs replaced. I would try that first... I went through the same deal with a 1998 Explorer, in fact I replaced both cat converters and a month or so later had the same check engine codes again. I did the Google search, bought some electrical cleaner and cleaned the MAP sensor. I have not had the check engine light come back and have almost 1500 miles on it since plus it runs a bunch smoother.

i have took quite a few rigs to them. quality work forsure, but they charged quite a bit more. the one thing i really like about them though, is that they will go out of the way to get your setup how you want it if you have something specific you want done.

worth the extra $$$ imo, its gets done right the first time.

How many miles are on the truck?

Catalytic Converters should be covered under an 8 yr, 80,000 mile federal emmisions warranty.

DL,

Don't see why you are jumping on Boone, he offered a suggestion from his experience which may or not work for FR. For less than $10 it might be worth a try.

floatinghat, i jumped on him because he has a common misconception with auto repair, all you need is that damn scanner and it will fix your car, or i looked on the internet and now i know what is wrong....not . more than likely fishrangers truck is setting a p0420 code for a bad cat that was diagnosed by dealer that has a clue what they are doing but charges more than an independent shop so he was looking for advice on where it could get done for less. p0171 and p0174 are fuel system lean codes for each different bank of the motor which are extremely common codes for a ford to get and they are not set by a bad cat, besides he never said he had those codes so where would boone come up with that. oh wait thats right he had those two lean codes and put cats on it that did not fix it, then found a dirty maf sensor that caused his problem to begin with. maybe if he was a mechanic he would have checked that first, i know i would have.

Wow deerlick you really need to get a life... all I offered was a suggestion for him to check out, never stated that for him to fix his problem that was all he had to do. I in fact had both of those codes, had $800 worth of service done at a Ford dealership... ie a 150K service check. The codes were cleared but the dealership told me that the cat on bank 2 had "insufficient flow" and the cost to fix it was like $700 for one side. They also told me the code would return. When it did return I took it to a muffler shop for the cat to be replaced and had both sides done to the tune of $600 since I did not desire to have car payments again. 30 days later the codes came back again, I did a little research by google to see if there was info on the codes and came up with that. I can be a pretty decent back yard mechanic if I think I can save some $$$. If fact the $6 I spent on the electrical cleaner seems to be a pretty good investment so far as the code has been gone now for some 1500 miles. I will be sure to incorporate the cleaner into the maintenance I do when the air filter is replaced each time.
