Smash and grab

As usual, I'd rather be lucky than good any day, but good luck is a probability based outcome. And it runs out from time to time.
I attended a meeting in Seattle last night, and instead of parking in the usual parking lot, which is free if I remember to have the restaurant mark the ticket, I saw an empty space on the street that must have been all of 100 feet closer to where I was going. It was 5:00.
At 10:00 PM I found the front passenger side window smashed in and my briefcase and a small backpack I take fishing missing. Lost my notebook computer and digital camera, along with an assortment of other stuff, files, flash drives with data and documents, my day planner with phone numbers and addresses, my check book, employee ID and two office building card keys, and probably some things I won't remember until I need them.
Filed a police report, talked to insurance, credit union, auto glass, fraud alert - just in case, so I think I've covered the necessary bases. The financial loss is less than $1,000 I think, but the P.I.T.A. may last a while longer. Not to mention driving from Seattle to Oly with a busted out window wasn't the best, but at least it didn't rain.
Hope the luck returns and I go another 10 or 20 or more years before that happens again. Sheesh!

after the crap while building your house, i'd say your dues are overpaid - go out and buy a lottery ticket, you've got some good payback coming!

About 25 years ago I was downtown Seattle and came out to find some punk sitting in my drivers seat and had my stereo on his lap. I ripped the door open and said "what the F you think you're doing!". He tried to stab me with a screw driver and I swung him around and planted his face into the door jamb. He bounced off and ran away fast without my stereo and I'm sure a pretty good mark on his face. Those were different times though. Today he or his lookout buddy would have put holes in me. Petty thief punks need to be exterminated.
Salmo, your stuff has probably already been sold to other rats.

My only auto robbery was when parked near the old Kingdome for a Mariners game. I never lock my doors, the wife always does. I left mine unlocked, as usual, the wife locked hers, as usual. Some dumb ass punched out the lock on her side and stole a few things. Would have been much less expensive if they had just opened my unlocked door.
With these smash and grabs getting more common, maybe leaving the doors unlocked and your valuables in the trunk makes some sense.

I just did almost 6 months in King County Jail with plenty of crack-smoking car prowlers. They are everywhere in downtown Seattle. The jail is full of them and I was forced to live with them so I picked their brains. This is what I learned:
Don't leave anything in sight and they won't steal your stuff. It's really that simple. If you want to catch the guy who did it, then park in the exact same spot, at the same time of day, and wait out of sight. These lowlifes work the same routine in the same spots. They are all homeless crack smokers and heroin addicts. They rip off whatever they can and take it to the "dope man". After they smoke up or shoot up all their stuff, then they just go out and prowl more cars. Pathetic, but it is the truth.
Peace

Man that sucks Salmo. Losing personal effects like that is a serious PITA. Even worse, the feeling of being violated by theft is something that pisses me off more than most other bad things that can happen to oneself. I'm sure you can relate.
When my Wife and I lived in Bellevue, we fell victim to a smash and grab car prowl on Christmas eve, 1997. We had just returned from my Mother's Christmas Eve dinner, and had planned to go to my Fathers house before coming home, so we had all his and my brothers gifts in the car. it got late so we decided to go over there the next day, and left everything in the trunk. That night, someone broke a window, stole the stereo, and had the gumption to pop the trunk, finding several hundred dollars of gifts ready for Christmas morning. We lost it all, and I can't begin to tell you had infuriated I was after that day. Christmas F'in eve.......
After that, I baited the car and my wife's car with 'goods' in plain sight during the afternoons and evenings, and waited with a baseball bat & cell phone in the parking lot late into the night for hours waiting for that son of a bitch to come back. I swear I must have been out there for two-three hours a night for two weeks straight... in the winter.
He's lucky as hell he never came back.
