There are a number of articles talking about what is going on in Congress; to take a portion of your 401K and invest it in an annuitie. One method is to put it into treasury bonds to help reduce the deficit. The idea is being vetted through a public process. Don't think they will have much success. I certainly wouldn't want the Goverment taking my 401K and turning a portion of it into an annuitie. No thanks, it has done well, even through all the downturns. The worst downturn I expereinced was the Divorce, which happen to coincide with the Dot Com fallout. Took a double whammy on that one.

I will sound way out of line here to most everyone, but I do wish that the government would look into the 401 k's a little harder. I believe that they are partly the result of the problems we are having now. Most people are over diversified and are not actively participating in the voting of the boards. The boards are allowing excessive payments to the CEO's based on short term gains. The short term gains make the 401's managers look real smart and more short term money and commissions. Not saying the government should control your 401K, but I do think that they would be smart to tighter regulate the market because of the mass money invested in it through things like 401K's.

Busch wanted to privatize Social Security. I think it was a good idea, if done proprerly. My employer got out of the system back in the 70s. Instead, the employer and I pay the equivalent amount into a well manged 401K investiment. Now at retirement I have a great nest egg to supplement my defined benefit plan. In fact, I will be buying an extra five years on my defined benefit plan from some of that money, earning an extra 7.5% a year, plus the defined benefit plan COLA. A good portion of the rest will go into a long term investment, with some money left for more shorter term needs. If not for being out of Social Security, I couldn't retire at the ripe old age of 55. It just takes discipline to not tap into it early, not panic when the market drops, and to add extra money when the market drops to get shares cheaper.

This plan in Congress wants to tap your 401K and move a portion of it into a Goverment annuity. No Thanks!
