Yes.

I recently started training for triathlons and completed my 1st one on Memorial Day.

Today I swam a mile non-stop in training which was huge for me.

So what else do you do besided fishing?

Just started crossfit training to try to get my weight down and have always spent various amounts of time in the gym. Played guitar since I was a kid and still do somewhat. Spent 2 years at the Culinary Instiute Of America in Hyde Park New York so cooking in a passion as well. Other than that and spending time with my girlfriend and our dogs I pretty much just fish. -TBJ

I am taking up Archery, so I can get into Bow Hunting. I was an avid runner, but can't do that anymore, so I am going to take up bicycling.

Castingpearls, look out for the future. Running for 28 plus years has ruined my back. Don't let that injury curve over run the benefit curve. Good luck on your Triathalon.

My knees decided they didn't like jogging any more, so I began cycling 11 years ago. Then got into endurance cycling for a while, doing one day 100 mile rides, then Seattle to Portland (STP) in one day, and Ride Around Mt. Rainier in One Day (RAMROD), and week-long bike rides across the state. But then I started building a new house nearly two years ago - it's dang near done. I like building stuff and woodworking, but I miss the cardio workouts of cycling. I hope to resume riding some this summer. Then there's backpacking into mountain lakes for a little trout fishing. It always comes back to fishing.

Last time I swam a mile it was called "survival training" and it involved me spending an hour in open water then three hours being treated for hypothermia. We didn't get wetsuits. It wasn't timed. It was point A to point B. It was also in early May before the water warms up. Try it some time. Puts things in perspective. Like for instance how nice it is to be in warm sweats on a couch in front of a TV. Might want a friend to follow in a boat incase you fatigue & cramp and need to be hauled out like a dead fish. Not alot of 'high-fivin' white guys' in spandex going on there.

Anyway, since you asked, I spend occasional evenings provoking idiots on this board like tonight, most watching movies with my family, others reading. My days I spend keeping the house ship-shape and my daughter busy. There's also flying all over seeing things I wish I could have seen when younger, loading the family into the camper and dragging them across the Western US, and cramming in fishing trips between lessons, recitals & teacher conferences. There's also cooking. I do up a kick ass rack of ribs.

I'm an outside guy.....hate to be couped up. I have more projects going than I have years left to live, I'm sure, but just love the stuff. I have several boats that I'm working on at the same time, a hobby shop for the wife that is being remodeled...it started it's life as a job shack, so it's insulated and wired, but other than that, it has seen a hard life....but it's starting to come around. Amazing what some paint, linoleum, and new wood can do. Then there is the never-ending battle with Mother Nature.....she's relentless and consumes a lot of hours, especially this wet, wet year. I'm going to take all my seeds and mowers over to Sg's place so he can enjoy them. wink

That's some cool stuff Aunty. Let me know if you ever want to sell a finished piece. I'd need another bottle of Riddlin to accomplish one of those, the ADHD would fire right up as soon as I started.......

Kids are my life outside of work and fishing along with playing alot of NL Holdem...just picked up a nice 3 man backpacking tent, new sbags and backpacks for the kids and "180 great hikes for children" book...of course the first 10 or so destinations are deep lakes with good fishing:) but hoping to get the kids dialed into the high country and lose 20lbs or so in the process this summer.

Thanks for the head's up Mike. I definitely don't want to sacrifice later years in pain for running so much that it does more damage than good now.

The whole point of starting the training was to get in shape and promote longevity. Running is my least favorite of the 3 aspects of triathlon so I probably won't ever get to a place where I am running too much. Most likely the case will be that I didn't run enough.

I am totally addicted to swimming right now though, its become a lot like steelhead fishing in that I am always thinking about it. Now I have 2 thoughts everytime I drive by a body of water:

1. "I wonder if there are any decent fish in there."
2. " I could have an awesome open water swim there."

Right on Salmo G. I have a goal of riding STP sometime in the next couple years. Doing it in one day sounds like a beast of a ride but I like it because it is somewhat "hardcore".

As of date my longest rides have been 20 miles. I've only been riding a road bike for 9 weeks so I am hoping to really inrease the mileage soon. I love mountain biking as well and I might do an Xterra triathlon which is done off road with mountain bikes and the run is a trail run as well.

Nice work Jack! Good pictures. Looked like you were having fun too. That is a pretty healthy hobby to undertake.

TBJ - I've done Crossfit or a variation since 2007, I really like it. I think it gives you a good overall work capacity. Lately I have been focusing more on met-con and endurance with less heavy weight work (although I still do a little). My 5k is in the 19:30 range right now, which is my personal best. My goal for the summer is a 10K under 40.

My hobbies:

Well for one, I am 95% complete on a 3000 sf total remodel of a 100 year old house (which I did in my 'spare' time). That was my 'hobby' for the last 2 years. I'll be finishing up the last bit of tiling over the next few weeks, and then moving to the exterior (painting, landscape, and repairing the pool). Although the exterior is going to get finished up at a much more agreeable pace. It turned out better than I had hoped for.

I have 3 daughters, so playing around with them is pretty much a big hobby.

I am really getting into windsurfing lately. It is way too much fun, and is the kind of sport that you can do for a long time. Plus, you can bring your kit on a family vacation to any body of water, and if the wind starts to blow, rig up and take off for some excitement.

I like all watersports. (surfing, waterskiing, wakeboarding, sponging, kayaks, swimming, diving boards, freediving, snorkeling, tubing, etc) Been focusing a lot on skimboarding the past couple of weeks, because I am heading to Cabo end of the month and that is the best wave-skimming location on the planet. So, I want to be dialed when I get there.

Grilling is one of my other favorite activities. I've pretty much decided that if it's dead, it should be grilled.

I love hunting, camping, hiking, mountain bikes, and tried slacklining for an hour the other day. That might work into hobbies as well.

Otherwise I am pretty boring.

Lot's of people listing spending time with the family/kids so I want to add that spending time with my 3 daughters and wife are what I really spend much of my time doing.

Fishing, triathlons, and everything else comes after t-ball and soccer games, dance recitals, and taking time to just hang out and be goofy with my girls.

I do some mountain bike riding but being a codger nothing too tough. I collect vinyl and do some record spinning at friend's parties. A little bit of blues, rock, jump blues and lots of reggae. Nothing like mixing records on my twin wheels of steel.
Also am working on a '71 Superbeetle. Taking off the rust and rattle canning it in a semi flat primer. Spending time with my immediate and extended family.
