Question?

I am going to build or have built a 6ft cedar fence, can a curve be put into a wood fence?

That would be plan A..if not straight fence line will be plan B.

Thanks

Simple and straight. Save the cash for the details. ..

If the curve is asthetically pleasing, it might be worth consdering alternate materials for the curve only (wrought iron or something fancy), which could then attach to the straight runs of the cedar fencing.

You could always use angle points to roughly trace the radius of the curve. Of course that will require more posts. 2 per angle point.

If the curve is not very tight, I think you could probably induce a radius into your rails using 2x material. You may have to back-bevel the fence boards to go around the curve as well.

If it were my house and I wanted a curved fence, I would figure out a way to do it. Then again, I almost always choose to do things the hard way if I think the end result will look cool to me.

Black vinyl fencing=No maintence. If ya want privacy add the slates to it.Just sayin.I'm in the process of replacing cedar decking that is only 8 years old,I should have gone with the spendy fake chit with no maintence.Have fun and good luck,

I build fence on the side if anyone needs help. I've never done a curve but it could be done with extra posts I suppose.

That was what I had thought ..More posts to get the radius/angle(bendage). I have not seen it probably for good reason.

SZ--last summer I did Trex 70percent of my deck. It is worth the money spent as for the remainder 30% I just last weekend powerwashed, let er dry then next in am stained, stained, stained. On down the road I will stain again or just tear it out for Trex. power Trex wash done.

I did Trex decking and am already glad. Cedar railings on porch and deck; stained them and am thinking maintenance shouldn't be too much. Probably need a fence on the south property line since the neighbor's yard resembles an auto junk yard. I have aesthetic issues about fences tho, so it will have to be cedar also.

I could help you build it, but it would probably lean to the left! smile

I love the Trex planks, but damn they are expensive!

As for cedar if you can possibly find some old growth it’s awesome. The knotty second growth not so much. I have cedar decking that is about ten years old. It has been pressure washed and painted every year. About 1/2 of it is now so rotten I need to replace it. I am NOT happy about this. My deck is 12X50. Replacing it with Trex is what I want to do, but can't justify the cost.

Check Dunn Lumber they have some great options for decking and vary in price. Dunn is my go to lumber store for projects. I gave up on Home D's warped, knotty crap "wood". Dunn has a great staff, I can take in a plan with the measurements, they help me make adjustments if needed or suggestions. They tally up the wood needed, I drive around back and it is loaded up. Or if needed they can deliver for a small fee, and drop it off where you need it.

Dunn has great lumber and great cutomer service.

Coho, let me know what you are looking at for material, I may be able to get it cheaper for you.

Cool Thanks Bryon

I do have a guy coming out today to give me an estimate. I know the owner and use to golf with him. I work for a living so having this built I am fine with. I want to have a summer and its time to fish.

I love cedar decks. But after talking with many guys, I decided to use Trex. At my age I want this to be the last deck I build, and I wanted the reduced maintenance. But the Trex railing and fence type products are super-expensive and damn ugly to boot. The cedar will require some work, but hopefully a lot less than a deck, and last a long time as well.

If you're even considering a composite deck, just fork out the cash and do it. I installed a Trex deck 3 years ago. My buddies with their cedar decks all thought I was insane to pay $10k just for the decking.

The joke is on those fukkers though. While I'm out fishing they're at home spending a week, dicking around with their deck, pressure washing and staining, trying to get it to last another season.

Wood decks are a PITA.

I'm replacing mine either this year or next. it sounds like the best stuff is TimberTech which Dunn carries but it's even more dollars than Trex. Anyone think the TimberTech is worth the added cost?

My cedar deck is 8 years old and has been a pain in the a$$ since the 2-3 years after it was built. It's over 1,000 s.f. not including the two sets of stairs, not looking forward to spending the coin in a nother year or so on the trex.Getting rid of the deck isn't an option with the wife either.Good luck,

Here are some shots of my last summer deck project. I happen to pick the stretch of hottest weather to work this. A buddy and I that have never done "Hacks" this worked on it.

The middle (top) was the original deck. The boards were rotting. The step downs I added after I bought the house.

I reused the original support beam. I think it was 6x12. I had to move it to the center and dig down. Added 5/8minus and I think 3 supports.

Framed so the 2nd step from first picture is same level.

I am very pleased how it turned out. Eventually, I will replace the remaining cedar with composite decking Monarch Teak Edge from Dunn. I did not build it with the Clips (they are very expensive) I used a Headcote square drive screw.

Coho,I hope that beam is pressure treated and is ground contact material. It is never a good idea to bury a beam in the future. haul the dirt away and let the deck breathe. I used a product called Tiger deck from the Depot for my Whidbey deck, hella expensive but installed with clips it breaths all the way around. Cedar rots like all the rest. This stuff has held up fine for 4 years have not even power washed it.
