I figured the middle day of the three-day weekend would be best traffic wise, so I decided to go look for some afternoon SRC. I'd heard that they're in the river pretty well now, but not in the area I fished. Got two, and that was typical for the other couple guys I saw and talked with. A few summer steelhead taken by sidedrifters, but nothing was hot by any measure. Ah well, the weather was a lot nicer than forecast, altho a bit breezy for the 5 wt.

Oh, that part felt good. Gonna' be hard to focus on moving in to the house, what with all the fishing opportunity of September and October at hand. What with the mid-C tribs and Hanford Reach opening the 8th, I feel the need for steel.

Sorry to hear it wasn't terriffic fishing, Sg. That fishery was one I was considering for one of my days off this week. Might still give it a go (perhaps on the way to someplace further south?), but it sounds like it's not in full swing yet.

Thanks for the report.

I was on the Cow Monday, below I-5. We were fishing for kings (unsuccessfully) and got a couple of "harveys" on spinners and saw maybe 10 others caught by guys trying for them.

I lost a king after a couple of headshakes.

RR, that's the thing with SRC (harveys). They seem to migrate in bunches. Choose the wrong 6 mile reach to fish one day, and you'd swear they aren't in yet. Two years ago I coulda' stayed in the same pool all day catching them 'til my arms were tired. It always helps to pick the right spot, but that often changes from one day to the next with SRC.

OK, can somebody provide a translation for this Orygun transplant?

?SRC=summer run chrome?
?Harveys= hatchery brats?
I have the I-5 part figured out! 8^)

Thanks.

Not to "steel" Salmo g's thunder but I think:

SRC=sea run cutthroat

Harveys=hatchery sea run cutthroat (adipose fin removed so they are harvested, not to be confused with harvest trout, which are sea run cutthroat as well but called as such since they often return in the fall during harvest time).

I was close to heading down to the Cow for SRCs on Friday since I'm in a meeting in Oly town tomorrow but now I'm heading elsewhere (eastside) instead.

sorry, but SRC is snoopy rod contest.

some of northern members here try to handicap themselves for a weekend contest. using nothing but snoopy styled bubble wrapped style childrens rods. i've heard that the spongebob squarepants version has a superior drag. SG can finish this with the rules.

wink

Before SRC became the snoopy rod contest, it was long an abbreviation for sea run cutthroat. Harveys is short for harvest trout, which are only hatchery origin on the Cowlitz. Everywhere else they are wild, with a 2 fish over 12 or 14", depending on location, limit, but most fishermen release them all because CNR (catch & release) has really helped restore SRC populations in Puget Sound streams where they had been on the brink, kinda' like steelhead are now.

Snoopy rules are governed by a committee of one or more, depending on who thinks he or they is or are in charge, depending. Sort of. Subject to change. That's as much as I know about Snoopy rules.
