I know there are more than a few of you that raise your own meat. Last fall I read, OD and it got me thinking more about the where's of what we as American's are eating.

In an effort to eat more locally produced products, I elected to start growing more. Currently we produce, quite a few berries, a couple types of stone fruit, and on a good year have a fair garden.

Lacking some sunshine, for my project I had several loads of logs hauled out this spring.

My "plan" is to plant an small orchard, and raise some meat chicens and turkeys in the same area. We have had a good sized laying flock for about 7 years now, so the meat bird thing is not a large leap.

Having no water for the orchard and hating draging hoses, this summer was mostly spent laying out 1100 ft of poly with lots of yard hydrants. As well as severl zones for irrigating the trees and garden.

I fenced the orchard area as well, no point in giving the deer in my neighborhood a food source then trying to keep them out. So I fenced the area first. Its 72 inch 2X4 mesh No Climb Horse fence with a run of 32 inch field fence on top.

I will be running some, hot wires at the base to keep the critters from digging under, as well as two in the middle to keep any climbing critters out.

Couple of pics for the Meat Farmers

Couple of Turkey pics for ID, not sure what I have exactly. Pretty sure two are Toms or at the very least confused. Two of them puffed themselves up and were strutting around one day

Fence them in with the blackberries, or just go get some Crossbow for the berries and eat the goats.

Top is bronze, not sure on the white, 3rd one looks like a bronze. Narragansetts have more tan. Last one looks like Black Spanish, or a cross, because there are no bars on the tail.

Nice fence!

Good for you! I used to always try and force store bought meats and processed food down my daughter just trying to get her to eat. She had all kinds of heath issues when she was young, once she got old old enough to start picking and choosing the food her body was telling her to eat her health issues cleared up. I learned my lesson the hard way, some peoples systems can handle it, some are way more sensitve.

Nicely done! Mine are pretty stinky and I'll be moving half of them outside in the next few days. 24 outside, 23 inside. It will be interesting to see how they perform.

I have 10 sold, so if things go as expected I'll end up paying about $4.50/bird finished. I'll do another batch in the spring, another 50+ or so.

What you don't see in the pic is a full hardware cloth floor, the leaves provide insulation. So in theroy when the coop is moved I will throw the leaves over the chicken crap/grass clippings. And throw something over it so it dosen't get rained on. (I put a bucnh of green, under the coop before parking it)
